Grandmas sew machine
 

I am cleaning up my sewing room. My husband is letting me put his grandmothers sewing machine on a shelf in my room. I am happy to have it as art in my room. I don't know if it works but I don't think so until I replace belts. My mother in law is brining me her sewing machine that she had when she was a kid which works and is still in box so I could place it next to hher moms. I can't wait to put hers up there. Here is grandmas machine. Wish we still had the table it sat in. Happy to have it either way.

What a lovely idea. Wish I had the space to do the same.

I have the same machine...a Singer 185K....it's a 3/4 machine....but heavy....sews beautifully. You should give her a tune-up, and put her to work :thumbup:

Oh, it's beautiful! I just love old machines. Fix it up. I bet it will outsew any new machine.

The 185 was the first machine I purchased. A real workhorse - sewed many foam back drapes on that machine. After my girls were born I traded it in for a zig-zag. On Ebay they are selling for more than I paid for machine and cabinet which I think was $79.00 (a lot of money in 1962 or 63).

Think I will look into getting new belts for it if it powers up. Right now it's on a shelf. Might take it to get serviced. Has not been used in yrs. we had it for almost 3yrs. Right when I was learning.

I have the same machine. Got it at a yard sale with the cabinet in perfect condition. She sews beautifully. Have fun with her.

Family sewing machines are so prescious. I have my mother's and her mother's(my Bigmama) which are Singer 15-0's and I just cannot part with them even though I can't use them all the time. I have my Janome MC 7000 that I bought in the '90's, a FW, an inexpensive Brother I bought at Walmart to use for classes(it is so light and sews great) and my new Brother PX 1500. How do you sew with them all!

That's one of the ones I want to collect but have yet to find. Awesome that you have it and even better that it was owned and used by a family member!

I have the same machine and I see yours was also made in Canada. I got mine for $15 and I love it. It sews beautiful straight stitches. I think it's great that you are displaying it.

Seeing this little green machine reminded me of...I rented this model from a Singer store for $5.00 to make maternity clothes shortly after getting married. I worked fast and only needed it a month. 1959.

Might have to find a manual just looking at it I don't have a clue even how to use except press the pedal.

What a treasure - for the both of you. I have my grandmothers 1939 model Singer machine in its original cabinet. Unfortunately, the electrical cord is so brittal I have removed it from the machine. I took it apart and cleaned - everything moved smoothly. With power I think it would work fine. Thanks for reminding me I need to get busy and fix it!

Yes those old machines are great. I have my mother's old White machine. She bought it in 1958 and treasured it always. Just remembering prices of lots of things in 1962. I bought my first new car then. Just a little over $2,000.00. I think I only made $60.00 a week at the time. Gasoline was less than a quarter per gal.
