grandmothers wedding ring quilt
1 Attachment(s)
This is a photo of my grandmother's wedding ring quilt. It is twin size and was pieced in the mid-fifties and not quilted until this past fall.
The story behind the quilt is that upon my grandmothers death the quilt top went to my aunt (my mother's sister). At some point in time while the top was in her position there was an argument about the quilt by two different people. (Not my mother). So in my aunt's anger or her trying to please both parties, she cut the top in half from side to side and gave each party their half. Many, many years later, my sister recieved both halves and she put them away for save keeping. She ask many quilters the best way to put the quilt back together and got many opinions. None of which she thought was a good idea. While visiting her last fall we pulled the top out and spread it out on the floor. I knew exactly how to fix it. I told her my idea and she agreed. Get rid of the frayed parts by removing them with a seam ripper. Turn one half from end to end and add to the middle of the half where you had removed all of the frayed section. Then as neatly as possible re-build the frayed part on the opposite end. Then finish as you would any other quilt. As you can see one half has discolored fabric. Obviously one half was better taken care than the other. |
beautiful quilt and even more beautiful story. So glad you and your sister could combine efforts to make it whole again.

Beautiful quilt, to bad it went through such troubled waters, good that it ended in a happy place, I bet your grandmother is smiling down on you two for taking care of her DWR quilt top. Bless the two of you.

Great quilt and story! Glad you saved its life.
|
Obviously it should have gone to the one who treasured it and stored it carefully. I am glad you were able to mend it back close to it's original size.
|
That is a SWEET quilt. Your idea of repair is excellent!
Not to change the subject but aren't families fun! |
Beautiful story and such a wonderful treasure of a quilt!
|
Family, geesh, I'm so glad you saved this treasure.
|
thank you for sharing the story behind the quilt :)
|
You did a great job putting it back together. It is beautiful and you two are lucky to have such a treasure.

A touching story of destruction and restoration. I'm so happy you knew and were able to restore it. Thanks for sharing. BTW, I love the quilt.

I had the pleasure of finishing 3 of my grandmother's quilt tops just last summer. I knew from the start I had pieces, lots of pieces, that didn't belong to these three. I suspected they were for a double wedding ring like yours ...Lots of scraps sewn into arches. Having no idea how to put a wedding ring together, I bought a book that had templates and instructions. It took me a month just to piece it all together. A professional quilted it for me. It's my favorite. I communed with her that summer and I will cherish my memories and her quilts.

That is lovely.

Wonderful, great job and thank you for sharing, what a treasure
Have a Blessed day Ellen |
Wonderful job!!!!!

Excellent solution. Those family squabbles lead to all kinds of strange behavior! I'm glad to know that the wound has been healed. I sort of like that the background on one side is a different color now but the rings still hold together the two sides of an old argument. What a family treasure you have saved.

I love to see stories like this. All to often these days people don't realize the amount of work and care that goes into quilts and therefore they are not valued. Clearly this quilt was valued, if the sisters fought over it enough that it was cut in half. It is also great to see that such great care was taken to restore it back together. :)

a beautiful quilt and a happy ending glad you were able to save it

What a work of love you & your sister have done. Thankfully both parties kept their halves of the quilt.

Its a lovely quilt though what a shame it had to go through so much trouble to get to where it is today. Thank you for sharing the quilt and its story. I feel sorry for your aunt who had to make that difficult decision those years ago. Congratulations to both you and your sister at doing such a good job putting both halves back together again. Best wishes,
