This is a photo of a framed quilt block I have on my sewing room wall. It is from the 19th century, pieced by my great-grandmother by hand. Only the center shows due to matting and frame - it's actually about 12 X 12 inches, edged in off-white (I believe) muslin.

wow, awesome

do you have a photo of your great grandmother that you could put with that picture,

How nice of you to frame it and hang it on the wall. It must make you smile and think about your grandmother and the tradition of quilting that she passed on down to you. :D

That is wonderful. What a great treasure you have. I only met my Grandmother once. She lived in Nebraska and I lived in California. I have a vague memory of her.

You on the other hand have something to remind you of her.

I agree with Craftybear. If you have a picture of her it would be nice to put it with the square on in a seperate frame next to it.

I am sorry for your loss, but what a remarkable long life! And glad you have the quilt to remember her by.

Lovely!!! I think old quilts and blocks are treasures to be preserved and loved!! These were made by a woman's own hands, with love for her family. What could be more precious? Fabulous that you have this!!

I'm going to add a photo of my great-grandmother, but need to say "oops," and correct the history. The photo is of my great-grandmother, Electa Parsons and she gave the quilt top to the little girl on her lap (my cousin) on the girl's wedding day. The quilt top itself, however, was actually pieced by HER mother, my great-GREAT-grandmother. It's called "broken dishes," and is over 120 years old.

My GM and GGM both made beautiful quilts but unfortunately I don't have any of them. My parents never saw the value in them and discarded them when those dear ladies passed away. You are lucky to have some mementoes of yours.

How beautiful. And such an inspiration.
