There are times when not only people can look grumpy if disturbed. This Owl sure didn't leave any room for doubt about having it's picture taken....it's nest is in the bush behind our house. :)

He/she is beautiful. Can you hear him hoot at night?

mgshaw 07-01-2008 11:44 AM

What an awesome picture!!!

SaraSewing 07-01-2008 12:27 PM

whooooooooo took the picture? I love his (her?) expression.

Shadow Dancer 07-01-2008 12:28 PM

Yes we hear her/him hooting at night, kind of a haunting sound when all is quiet. Loretta, we used a zoom lens to get that picture, at first we didn't think there was anyone in the nest and then this head popped up... guess Owls don't like being disturbed during the daylight hours. :) This one is a Horned Owl.

Wow! Great photo, maybe the "grumpy" part is simply over having to see all that sunshine in the day time?

sewnsewer2 07-01-2008 04:35 PM

 Nope, he/she doesn't look like a very happy camper at the moment.

But it's pretty!

Years ago, I was lucky enough to share woods with a huge great horned owl, whose wingspan was nearly as wide as the driveway. They are so impressive!

tlrnhi 07-01-2008 05:38 PM

This is the second summer we've had an owl out back, not sure if it's the same one. Some nights we hear it hooting and then it breaks out into loud cackling. The nest is huge, there was no missing it when we went for a nature walk out back. What surprised me was that it's in a dead birch tree....not sure how safe that tree is for a nest that size. The ground under the tree is covered with soft downy feathers too. I guess the nest is lined with them.

Grouchy but cute. Kinda looks like hubby in the morning lol.
Thanks for sharing

Sounds like whoever your owl is sitting on eggs is correct. We have two pet birds and even when they molt you don't see downy ones like you're talking about Shadow Dancer.

Thanks for sharing such a great picture.

DreamXer 07-02-2008 06:14 PM

Oooh! Very cool pic! Can't believe you were able to get one! He/she must feel real safe around your home!

Marcia 07-02-2008 06:35 PM

WOW!!

Harmony 07-02-2008 08:26 PM

Wow, beautiful bird! I think she looks grouchy enough to keep ME out of your backyard--your own personal "watch owl."

jbsstrawberry 07-02-2008 08:29 PM

Ohhhh I need him for the bunny problem in the garden!!!

Another beautiful pic!!!

I could deal with Grumpy in my back yard...Sneezy on the other hand, that could be an issue. Unless of course he brought Doc over for a visit every now and again :D
