My mom purchased this quilt and well lets just say I saw it and made a comment about how it needs to stay and my house and well it is now at my house on my bed!! But it is such an unusual pattern. It is machined pieced but the middles is squised together to make it 3d like. the offwhite material is muslin not soft very ruff. Ohh and I have a new purse so very cute I am not a purse person but had to throw the picture into here!!

Do you recognize me???

The block looks like a Lemoyne Star to me... probably used thicker batting and sewed the middle of the stars to make it puffy.

Quiltforme 10-10-2010 08:37 PM

I believe this is also appliqued on. the points have some extra material sewn onto them then gatthered to make the puff or 3d look. I have never seen it will look up the lemoyne star. Thank you!!

gale 10-10-2010 08:42 PM

That looks like some kind of fabric folding type block. I can see what you mean by the fabric in the middle.

np3 10-10-2010 08:44 PM

I can see why you liked it!

SueDor 10-11-2010 02:16 AM

The center also looks like it has folded pieces.

I'm wondering if this is just poor piecing?
I'm noticing all the lopped off points on the 'star'; and look at the straight edges of the diamond shapes pieced next to the curved elliptical shapes....it would have to be 'gathered' in order to fit together. And that would make a bunched center which appears to be covered by a circle to hide the effect.

Interesting. And not unpleasant at all when finished, washed and loved!

Your purses are too cute.

nativetexan 10-11-2010 07:54 AM

oh i love your purse. i saw a larger purse with the flower on it done in a very soft yellow color.looked like butter!

stewyscrewy 10-11-2010 08:24 AM

it looks like a lamoyne star with cathedral windows on the inset points.

Tippy 10-11-2010 08:33 AM

That's an Amish Dahlia. The puffy parts are pieced into it making kind of a 3-D effect.. here's another example. http://www.amishcountrylanes.com/Pages/hs1895.shtml. If you look at the close up you'll see the gathered "petals".

kwhite 10-11-2010 08:34 AM

I beleive it is the Amish Dahlia. the gathers are intended but not the points cut off. I love this pattern and I just bought a top from an Amish sale this summer.
This is a peiced one, Not quite the same but you get the idea.

I got a security warning from AVG for that site. Anyone else? I went ahead and just closed the window but I think I'll do a system scan now just in case.

The Lemoyne Star is what it looks like to me and useing a stack n' whack methos or fussy cutting. It also looks like they might have maybe stuffed it a little to give it that 3d effect but i am a newbie so don't know much

Never mind-I don't think it was that site. I was moving some files and apparently one triggered a false alarm.

quilt crazee 10-11-2010 02:36 PM

it looks like the dahlia block to me, too!

Please tell me where you found it on that site. I must have missed it. Thank you.

Your quilt is beautiful and unusual, I love it!! Your purse is very cute :D:D:D

luvnquilt 12-30-2010 02:09 PM

Ok, you got me hooked. I found a quilt on the Amish country lanes webside called "Dahlia Star Quilt. - I'm looking for a pattern for the block or a quilt but haven't located it yet. Lots of patterns for "giant" dahlias... but I would love to get that for my to do list if I can. Will let you know if I have any luck :)

aborning 12-30-2010 05:22 PM

Has anyone done this? I am really into flower gardening --so of course, I love this block--but don't really understand the directions. Would anyone do a tutorial if you know how to do this? That would be wonderful as I have never seen this block and it looks very unique. I would love to do it--I think it would also make a very nice wall hanging made out of fun big bright flower material for summer. (or for winter--so instead of looking at the three feet of snow outside my window--I could look at flowers on my wall!)

cheryl rearick 12-31-2010 05:16 PM

It's nice to have something different. could be one of a kind :)

mary 01-01-2011 06:49 AM

This pattern is not only an amish pattern as I have one that was pieced in Tn. long years ago. I think some called it a "gathering star". I do not have pattern, just quilted squares. Beautiful pattern, wished I did have pattern for it. Thanks

JeanLowe 04-25-2011 05:08 AM

beautiful quilts!!

Carrie 04-25-2011 08:21 AM

It is also known as Kansas Sunflower and the pattern and templates are in "Encyclopedia of Classic Quilt Patterns" by Leisure Arts. Also known as Star Flower. Many names for the same pattern.

CMARAS1234 04-25-2011 07:45 PM

I think it is called the Dahlia Star,. an amish pattern. cmaras

AnnaK 04-25-2011 07:59 PM

Funny, Charisma just posted a quilt with "vintage flowers" that looks just like what you've posted here. I think I've seen it in magazines and it IS a dahlia of some sort. Very nice effect. Good luck id'ing it.
