Have you ever....

.....been quilting a way and 5 minutes later realized your bobbin thread ran out?

Please share what mishaps you have had in your quilting journey and if there was a solution to your problem. Thanks for sharing!

It's the worst when sewing curves and I've removed the pins so as to not sew over them!

Julienm1 11-10-2020 03:41 AM

Don't read if faint of heart....Sewed my finger while free motion quilting. Yep. Called 911 and four handsome paramedics showed up. (First 2 needed reinforcements.) No pain. No Blood but believe me the 5 of us were laughing ALOT...started with my smart A S S comments. Obviously got unattached and now very careful. Brought a cake to the crew for helping me. They were surprised some one would do that for them.

FMQed a lovely feather border section only to find the backing had flipped into the feather. It looked really good on the top but I had to rip the whole border out to remove the backing.

Once when I was FMQ’ing, I heard a loud thump thump thump but I didn’t stop right away. It turned out that my cutting mat next to the sewing machine was actually quilted onto the back of my quilt. I’ve learned to stop right away when there’s a strange noise!

Cheshirepat 11-10-2020 08:37 AM

Wow, Doggramma! I've never even considered that happening... Yikes, Julienm1, that is NOT the way to meet fellas! :)

You made me laugh so loud my DH could here me in the bedroom and thought something was really wrong!! I can't tell you how many times I have done that! The worst is when I am piecing in a long line of pieces and they are all over the back of the sewing table and floor. Very annoying is all I can say when this happens. Not as bad when I am FMQ because there is only one thread to pull up and I can go right back where I was and keep going. I am never thrilled when this happens but it is funny to know I am not alone.

My biggest goof to date was that I accidentally quilted a whole quilt top inside another quilt. I had a pile I was sandwiching and this quilt top stuck to the back of the batting on top of it. It was slightly smaller so I didn't notice until it was missing. I felt sick when I peeled back some edges and found that top quilted into the other quilt! No, I did not pick it out, I just left it and counted it as my loss. Now I sandwich only one quilt at a time! No more stacks.

I can't match anyone of you for having such terrible mishaps like sewing my finger in the machine. I have cut my finger while cutting off dog ears from blocks. Not too much blood but it annoyed me that I had to stop and clean my finger up and bandage it.

I can send you a bobbin or two. Here I sit trying to run out of bobbin thread.

I ran out of "empty" bobbins to use so ordered 20. Two days later, I missed that they were still in the cart...ordered 20 more.

Now, I'm trying to run out the thread from all the original wound bobbins that I needed empty to begin with. The thread is miscellaneous embroidery thread colors I needed for previous projects. Six bobbins emptied yesterday with only 43 more to go. So now tell me please, why did I order 40 more bobbins?

Need a spare? LOL!

PS: I had to turn off the machine sensor that beeps when bobbin thread is low so I could run out!

Way back in the day, when I was basting my first quilt, I had it all spread out on the floor. When I finished, I discovered I had sewn it to the carpet.

Jingle 11-10-2020 03:36 PM

The one thing I have done several times is to sew part of the back that had flipped over. I did learn a fast way to remedy it.

hahahahahahaha!!! OMGosh....

I quilted my quilting glove, quite thoroughly, in fact, to the back of a quilt. I’ve learned to not sew until everything is accounted for.

Julienm1 11-10-2020 06:41 PM

So when I started quilting I would go to a quilter/friend's house on Wed to sew/eat/chat. I loved going there and learned so much from her. One day I abruptly stopped sewing, packed up my stuff. She said are you leaving so soon? I said no. Just done sewing. She said why. I showed her...I had sewn one orphan block to the back of another block. Guess what we were doing while sewing? Yep. She had opened up a bottle of wine.https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png

I was free motion quilting a small quilt as practice and when all done and so proud of myself, discovered that the Supreme Slider had somehow got "loose" and I had quilted a large portion of it to the back of my quilt. Had to pick it out and have never used that slider again. It was supposed to make the bed of the machine slippery and make sliding quilt around easier.
Still don't understand why I did hear something or feel something was wrong.

I had to laugh out loud at your too many bobbins story

Rhonda K, You are the Queen of the bobbin world and may hold the title as the World's greatest bobbin keeper.

I have done that often enough that I tried using packing tape to hold the slider in place. That got to be a pain, so I stopped using one on my domestic machines. The biggest goof I’ve had so far with my Sweet Sixteen happened when I was quilting a large quilt. I finished the last bit of quilting, pulled it out and discovered that I'd somehow folded the first half I quilted under the second half and very neatly quilted them together. Had to unquilt the entire thinghttps://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/shock.pnghttps://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/mad.pnghttps://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png.

When I first learned to make clothes, I made a dress using fabric with a nap, like velveteen or something similar. I stitched the sleeve in wrong-side-out------3 times!

SusieQOH 11-11-2020 07:02 AM

My new Bernina has really large bobbins but also warns you when you're running low. I love those features.

I just finished the cutest quilt but I didn't notice until I finished that I have 2 creases in the back. Grrrr! I'm not going to fix it though as I'm keeping this one.

Watson 11-11-2020 07:42 AM

I quilted quite a ways on a white quilt until I realized that I had forgotten to change the bobbin and was using black thread from my last quilt. Of course, it all had to come out.

I've also quilted scraps of fabric into the back of a quilt. Grrr....And, flipped the backing of an entire side of feathered border over so it was sewn onto itself. What can I say? I learn by my mistakes. (Usually)

I've quilted the flipped-over edge of the quilt and pieced without a bobbin for two feet, but those were all correctable mistakes. Today I glue basted a quilt on which the placement of the blocks was critical with two misplaced blocks. I had taken a picture of the quilt before I sewed the blocks together, and it was perfect. But when I sewed the blocks together, I turned a group of three 180 degrees. A couple hours after I glue basted the quilt, I stood back to admire it - only to realize my mistake. No going back now. My only consolation is that it's a lap quilt and will rarely, if ever, be laid out flat. For a perfectionist like me though, this is hard to accept.

loisf- that's beautiful !! I don't see anything wrong with it. Lovely!

I'm sorry, I'm laughing

I'm sorry but I'm laughing that you sewed it to the carpet. I thought mine was bad - I was also hand basting and sewed the pieces onto my pajama pants into the basting. I didn't realize this until I stood up and my sewing stayed on my leg.

Well, at least it was basting stitches and not regular stitches.

I decided that I wanted to FMQ circular pattern all over the quilt. Normally I do not use density quilting but decided I would for this one. Well, I attached my free motion foot and adjusted it. I had a terrible time moving the quilt and could not understand what was wrong but I persevered. I had the quilt finished when I realized that I was adjusting the foot the wrong way and kept moving the quilt closer! AAHHH! Anyhow the quilt is a gift for someone who doesn't quilt so I am hoping that she ignores all of the hiccups resulting from me tugging. Talk about being an idiot! I think I hit the jackpot.
