Well with some help from Kimbie I got the cutting layout for my newest project. It will be for DS and DDIL She redid their bedroom in black, White and Red with hearts.. It could take me years to cut this out anyone have any quick tips? I just cut out enough to try a block and I think once I get the hang of it I will be ok.

The plan

Oh I love that pattern.....did you design that?

In Judy Martin's newest Log Cabin book, she recommends cutting on the lengthwise grain of fabric to prevent stretching. On small blocks, that might not make much of a difference, but I can see where it would help on larger ones.

You can stack your fabrics and cut four layers of strips at once. She also cuts each rectangle size at that time and puts them in silverware sorters. (Instead of piecing and trimming to size at a later time, if that makes sense). Someone here made a beautiful log cabin last summer and posted a picture of her sorted pieces, too.

WOW    I LOVE IT. I have been wanting to make a quilt with those colors for my oldest daughter. Where did you get the pattern? Pam

Strip piecing is the way to go for log cabin quilts. It should go together quicker than you think!

I find that if I have a lot to cut, I just turn on the television. A couple of episodes of Law and Order help me to get something done without thinking about how much there is to do.

I have Quilt Wizard and just chose a log cabin square and changed out the colors. For some reason my program wouldn't print it out so Kimbie helped me out with the cutting directions and Yardage. She has EQ. I did find a wall hanging on line that was a heart log Cabin but couldn't find directions so thought what the heck let's just design it! I also think someone on the board did a similar one not to long ago.

Strip piecing will make it go much quicker and of course, rotary cutting.

Eleanor Burns is one of the best at this.

Question... Should I do those two center blocks in the heart with all reds? What do you think?

littlehud 01-09-2010 06:55 PM

Beautiful. I love black, white and red quilts. So striking.

jljack 01-09-2010 07:00 PM

Yes, I think the heart inthe center would look striking all red!!

Also, if you cut long strips of each color, and then sew them on in turn, trimming after each is sewn on, it goes really fast. If you can look at the Eleanor Burns Log Cabin book, she shows a way to sew several blocks onto a strip and then cutting the pieces to length one at a time. It's really fast!!!

barnbum 01-09-2010 07:05 PM

Yes! I was thinking when I looked at the first photo I thought all red on those two mid heart pieces would look awesome...and I wasn't going to mention it--but you did.

Great start!

Jingle 01-09-2010 09:14 PM

I made a log cabin sewing a strip and cutting it off and had to trim the blocks to same size to put together. I made others where Directions said to cut each row a certain size and they all came out same size. It took a while to cut out the bottom one but. I was happier with end results.

Here it is with the red center. I think I like it this way! Only 38 more blocks to go. I have to get some more fabric something with a black and white print I think.

Oklahoma Suzie 01-10-2010 10:30 AM

Love the colors on your block.
