Those are called "mo-la(s)". I got them in Cartagena (car-ta-hay-na), Columbia on a cruise thru the Panama Canal last April. There is a local woman here who I just met @ a quilt show last weekend who makes something similar. She agreed to get me started. I had a hard time picking just these 2 as most of them were stunning. They are made in the mtns by natives. They use ANY fabric they can get their hands on so you might have polyester knit, cotton/poly blend, t- shirts, etc. I am going to have them framed but will place on matting "as is" to keep them original, then glass. The TORTUGA (turle) is all hand made, the other is machine and hand. They layer the fabrics and cut and sew the designs as they go. I have been meaning to Google for patterns.. Glad you like them! I LOVE Central and S. American art but also the First Nation Indian work from N. W Canada.....

Did you ever notice that in some cases the pictured quilt does not match the directions exactly?

Yep! Did notice that. This quilt is MY version of the one in the book. There was NO WAY I was making 68 of those hearts........... 30 was plenty. I have enouf heart squares left to make a strip the width of the quilt for the backing and will probably just use the white dot on dot for the rest of backing I really don't want to use white but...... oh well !!!!! need to finish and MOVE ON !!!!

Nope! My PFAFF Creative Visions did it for me.... have a billion stitches that will go up to 9mm in width. It is also an embroidery machine which I am ashamed to say I really am kinda afraid of , so don't use much. I had some problems with the embroidery part when I first got it, didn't get much help from the LQS where I bot it so am just a little "gun" shy ! Maybe one of these days I'll get BRAVE

I just love this quilt - I will have to try to find pattern!!! Our $$ store never has quilt books and I check often lol
For the back you could use either strips of fabrics used on front or big blocks and maybe sash with white - just a suggestion since you said you really didnt want to use white. Thanks for sharing cheryl

I used Steam a Seam lite to fuse the hearts to white fabric, then used "SOLVY" water soluable stabilizer (comes in different weights) before I used my machine blanket stitch. After I blanket stitched, I cut away all the plastic I could and then soaked the squares in hot water in the sink for abt 15 minutes. Surprise! The rest that was under the stitching just disappeared. I think this stuf is mostly used for machine embroidery.. pretty cool !!!
