A few months ago I requested scraps to start a heartstring block project. Here are 6 blocks that I have done so far.

I should have used a bigger strip of the focus fabric. But it is too late now.

A special thanks to those who sent scraps so I can strip them up. Here is a preview. I am taking a little time everyday to iron and cut strips.

Going to be a great quilt

erstan947 12-23-2010 12:14 PM

This is such a classic quilt pattern and yours is wonderful. Good Job.!!One of my favorite patterns:)

belmer 12-23-2010 12:17 PM

Very pretty and colorful. Love those scrappy heartstrings. I think I may have to start one again soon, my strips are adding up here.

klgreene 12-23-2010 12:22 PM

Didn't know that this pattern had a name. I just call it a scrappy quilt. I've started one too, but I think I'm getting my points in the middle and the other corner to small. I like yours better. What size blocks are you making? Mine are 6". I don't have a focus fabric either. I never thought of doing that. You are off to a great start. Not going to race you. I just do a few blocks in-between things, when I figure it's big enough it's done.

katsewnsew 12-23-2010 12:23 PM

Your heartstrings looks great! Hmmmm, I think that will be my next project! Good job!

CarrieAnne 12-23-2010 12:23 PM

Very pretty!

craftybear 12-23-2010 12:29 PM

great job

katiescraftshop 12-23-2010 12:33 PM

Love it! I might need to add that to my project list as well.

No No No - that focus fabric looks WONDERFUL - It's the 'organizing' part of the scrappy quilt! I LOVE it that way!

I think it's wonderful - If you don't like them - send them to ME! :) :) :)

DebraK 12-23-2010 01:03 PM

I heart heart-strings.

Beautiful heart strings quilt!!

ccb2200 12-23-2010 02:26 PM

That quilt will be very pretty when you finish it.

Kyiav10 12-23-2010 08:18 PM

Thank you all!

I started piecing a second OBW, you may remember the post. I also started piecing a Warm Wishes. I also posted some pics.

Well, the heart strings project quilt is for my oldest nephew, hope to have it done for his graduation in 2012. Since I hand quilt it will take forever!!! I thought I should probably work steadily on this as a piecing project instead of the others.

I found the heartstrings link on quiltville.com. I think they ask for blocks on their site so I will also send a couple there.

I think the finished size is 7.5". I will have to double check that.

I am using Bonnie Hunter's suggestion of piecing them on already cut and spuared telephone book paper. It is going pretty easily and they tear off easily.

I love the focus color strips. They are wide enough because they have such depth of color. They stand out well and really, well, FOCUS they eye. Great job so far.

I have such a hard time putting unmatched patterns or un-coordinating colors together, yet I love the scrap quilts of others. I always think I need a neutral between them to separate the conflicting patterns. How do I overcome this? I've often wondered if I put a border around each block if that would help.

grannypat7925 12-24-2010 04:53 PM

These strip quilts always turn out so pretty. I have a bunch of strips waiting for me to start one.

I think the blue focus strip she used is your answer. See how it does an on-point bordering of the chaotic strings? I did a string quilt that I did border the pieces on because I felt the same way you do....but I never thought of using a focus fabric . I learn something new every day!

hperttula123 12-24-2010 06:30 PM

that is pretty

DonnaB 12-24-2010 06:48 PM

These are fun to make, love yours.

Becca Bear 12-24-2010 09:05 PM

Nice. I like the pattern and the fabrics you've used. Can't wait to see a picture of the finished quilt.

Kyiav10 12-24-2010 10:17 PM

Thank you all!

I think that by using a focus fabric helps to coordinate a scrappy quilt for those that have problems with it. This will be my first TRUE scrappy quilt. Another trick is to use whatever fabric you pick out of a brown paper bag. Only reason that you can't use it is b/c it's the same as the previous strip/piece.

tcarota 01-02-2011 11:55 AM

Can't figure how you can get the blue lined up so good?

I measured it on the telephone paper that is the foundation. I will try to take pictures tomorrow and post them so you can see it.

They are actually not correct. I think I messed up measuring the blue fabric or the sewing. Thank you for the kind words.

Here are three blocks that I have together.

Enjoy.

marmalade 05-25-2011 04:29 PM

They look really pretty! I like how you got the blue fabric to line up as an "X" - perfection!

So, was it difficult to do???

Nolee 05-25-2011 05:29 PM

Those are lively and wonderful squares. Don't you just love string quilts? I sure do. They are so easy and you think they would be ugly with all the odd colors put together, but they are actually beautiful. I have a large one I have to go to the LQS to long-arm for my 14-year-old granddaughter. I was very skeptical at first, but I think it will be gorgeous.
