like the 2nd idea. makes it very pretty and not so closed in if you know what I mean.

Your right - I love the 2nd one! It is so hard to see it in my head - I knew someone would help! :)

So the squars are 3.5x3.5? I think we have a winner!!!

That's what I was thinking. It wasn't competing with the ribbons, it was just sort of off floating nearby. And it kept the spirit of the quilt. I don't think it needs an intricately pieced block.

Yup, they all finish at 3.

-So the 25 patch will get 5 x 3" = 15" square (finished).
-That will be surrounded by the white strips, which you can cut 2" or larger (I'd use 2.5" to give enough fudge room).
-Then center and trim down the whole block to 18.5" (unfinished).

Your MIL will love it! My very best wishes for her.
