My new daughter-in-law picked out this fabric for her quilt, she'd like a Hawaiian quilt. I don't know her very well at this point because both she and my son are in the military and not located close. I know she doesn't like fussy patterns with little pieces or flat quilts. So I'll make a puffy comforter that is tied. She also doesn't like pink or red, she is a blue lover.

This fabric is way outside of what I would ever purchase and I know she likes something contemporary or modern. I thought about a turning twenty using this for each block, moving it around. Or a D9P and using this for the 4 corners and other blue batiks for the rest. Help.

What colors is she using in her home. maybe you could pick some of those colors. Do an image search on Hawaiian quilts and get an idea of some of the colors they use. The only Hawaiian quilts I've seen had a ton of applique work (looked like they folded a large piece of paper and cut out a really fancy design, then appliqued it on).

I've never really seen a Hawaiian quilt with anything similar to that. The ones I've seen have intricate applique work.

If Hawaii prints such as that one are her thing, I think your idea for a D9P is excellent. Make it in a large block size so there will be no tiny pieces and use other blues to compliment the print.

Bento Box, maybe? Shibori Dragon has it. Go blue and white, it's fresh looking and there's little chance she won't like it.

I agree I think this has more of a tropical look.

I think a BQ would look good. This could be the 12 inch blocks then you just need 2 other colors..a white maybe and a blue or a gray. That will make this piece the focus and no small pieces. Very modern looking.

I love the fabric! I would just do a bear paw or something with just white contrast, with larger blocks so as not to lose the pattern. The fabric itself is Hawaiian.

I love this fabric. If she's not one for fancy, then don't cut at all. Maybe sew a couple of widths together, do a thin border in white and then a wider border in this print. Then for quilting do a wider cross-hatching. Simple with lots of impact.

I saw one earlie out of a pink/red shade.

She picked this fabric out at a LQS when I visited them in Jacksonville, NC. A whole week of helping with the new Granddaughter (3 weeks old at the time) and bonding.

Personally, I love that fabric! I'd put some more blues and a few greens and make it look a bit watery. Mostly because when I think of Hawaii I think water. (bright colored flowers but, seeing as you said she doesn't like pink or red that would be out)

I think you are on the right track with the patterns you are looking at and the batik. Maybe even a puff quilt.

I totally agree. I love the fabric. The idea of not cutting and then adding borders is something I want to do when I find the right fabric. If she chose it, she'll love whatever you choose to do. :)

I just took a second look at your picture and it looks as if the fabric has already been cut. I think I would do very big blocks so as not to lose the pattern and then add some tone on tone white with a bit of a muted pattern. Then add borders and possibly some sashing of a pretty green. :)

I understand your situation. I, too, am in the process of doing a quilt for a friend's niece. Her colour choices are far outside my comfort zone/box, but I am going with the BQ2 pattern because it is a little more modern and lends itself well to the vibrant colours I will be using. BQ might work well for you too. Fast, easy and effective. Good Luck.

I would get a book at the library showing Hawaiian quilts, pick out 4 or 5 I would enjoy working on, photocopy them and send them to her to see if she likes them. My friend brought me a kit for a pillow when she traveled to Hawaii and it had one piece that had been cut when it was folded in 4s. ( Like when we use to cut out a snowflake from paper.) It was breadfruit which is their local product and attractive. Ask her to send a sample of a fabric or two that she likes for the main large Hawaiian center so you are on the same wave length, or do the main large Hawaiian center in blue with pretty quilting in white. It would be sad to do a beautiful quilt and if it does not appeal to her it will not be loved. Maybe she could send photocopies if quilts she likes.I think Hawaiian quilts are done in only 2 colors and usually both are solids??? I am not certain on this and rules are meant to be changed. You are very nice to make her a quilt.

Hawaiian quilts are a (a style) of quilt---
perhaps you should do a search and look at 'hawaiian quilting' before deciding- since a turning 20 or any others you mentioned are very much- not hawaiian quilting.

hawaiian quilts are appliqued--and very beautiful...the fabric she chose would be beautiful for the appliques- with a white background.
