Hello everyone,
I just got back from Kentucky (where I'm from) and I picked up my great grandma's sewing machine.

It's dirty, a total mess, it has been in my Grandma's house since she passed away years ago. No telling how long it has been since someone used it. I know my Grandma used it when my mom was a kid, as you can see in one of the pictures. My mom and her cousin scratched their names on it when they were little.

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this type of machine. I don't know anything about old machines or where to find info on them. It's a singer but that's all I know. I'm tickled to pieces to get this machine.

Anyone have any ideas on cleaning it? I don't want to mess it up but it is NASTY!

I see a plate built into the bottom of the machine that says G3714303

Those old machines like yours sew so nicely. Just oil it up and let 'er rip. It only does one stitch, but for quilting a nice straight stitch is great.

Singer has a web site for old machines. I'll see if I can find it, you put the serial #, they'll tell you what year it is and you can usually download a manual for it.

I'm no expert but, I'd say it's a Singer model 66... and it's a "Red Eye" (the decorations look like red eyes... some are missing on your machine)

with back clamping feet - which are not real abundant but it is possible to find them....

use oil on the moving parts and singer grease (available at wallyworld) on the gears...
that machine should purr like a kitten... 8)

Both forums have these great guys who were Singer dealers waaaaaaaaaaaaay long time ago and they can answer all kinds of questions about your 'baby'... and can tell you how to clean the machine etc

Hi, Great machine. You are so lucky to get her...She is a Singer, probably a 66, the # that starts with a G is her serial #, The DAY SHE WAS BORN. If you contact customer service at Singer they can tell you when. To get a manual, so you can learn how to put her needle in properly, and the lube and oil her, thread her up, can be obtained from the Singer website or from Customer Service. P. S. DO NOT USE ANY THING STRONGER THAN DILUTED WINDOW CLEANER to clean her. The beautiful paint job will be removed be a strong cleaner. I recommend a rung out soft cloth and dish water, to start.
