I am making a baby girl quilt for a soon to be born granddaughter of a co-worker. I think it needs more color around the edge and it could be a bit larger so....
I tried the random size and color border Sample alond the top) and then I thought maybe repeat the color order and all the same size (Sample along the side).
I'm not able to decide....please let me know what you think!!!
Thank you!

UPDATE:
I am adding a picture that has a combo of the 2 borders. It wont let me do it here so I will add it in a reply...
It has smaller size blocks with random color placement. Sorry, I don't have a design board and had to pin it to a curtain. And it is just pinned on and not sewn. Kind of makes it lumpy but I think you can still see it.
Let me know what you think. :D

Top sample is random color and size

Side sample of repeated color all the same size

The little bugs show better in this one

I vote for random.

I like the top a lot.

3incollege 01-29-2008 01:58 PM

If it were me, I would just put the stripped fabric along the blue edge.
I don't think it needs two borders. You did a nice job! lucky co-worker.

Both options look great. My own personal preference, just because, is the uniform size. But, really, I could live with the random sizing also. Big help, aren't I? Sorry. Cute quilt! Love that blue border in there. Will you use that for the binding also?

P.S. I like the quilt even without any more borders.

cynde 01-29-2008 02:31 PM

I also think it looks good without the coloured border, but if you want an opinion on one of them I vote for the one with the narrow, uniform strips.

Make sure you let us see it when you have decided and it's all put together and quilted.

Catherine 01-29-2008 02:32 PM

I liked the smaller same size...seems to fit better with the size of the pinwhells with over bearing them. The colors are beautiful! I love baby quilts.

jamsbuying 01-29-2008 03:16 PM

Beautiful baby quilt. I like the looks of the same size stripe border, but that is just me (& I am NOT creative at all). I've added up to three different size borders to make a baby quilt, or a lap quilt, the size I want. Let us know what you decide and be sure and post a picture.

Dawn Hendrix 01-29-2008 03:18 PM

If it were mine I would do the random colors.. It just finishes it off for me. But either way it looks FABULOUS... Great JOb!

Kyiav10 01-29-2008 03:19 PM

Love this quilt. Great color choices.

Oh jeepers--you'll hear 50-50 and be no further ahead, but since the quilt pattern is precise, I like to keep that theme and go with the uniform smaller border idea.

Good luck. And of course you'll post when you're done? Right?? :D

Chele 01-29-2008 03:23 PM

What a cute quilt! I vote for the same size border you show on the left. I love how the multi-colored border frames your pinwheels! That is one lucky baby! :D :D

P.S. Thanks for letting us vote. I voted in Florida today and it wasn't nearly as much fun!

bj 01-29-2008 04:13 PM

I love your quilt! I vote for the uniform strips, but I think it looks great without them. Don't you hate when you get one done then have to pick your brain for a way to make it a smidgen bigger? Very nice job!!!

thimblebug6000 01-29-2008 04:18 PM

If you have enough of the blue, could you make an inch wide binding of it instead? (just my opinion......) All those colours in the outside strip border draw your eye out there, instead of letting you focus on the beautiful pinwheels...

Moonpi 01-29-2008 04:18 PM

I'm for uniform sizing on this one, too.

Tiffany 01-29-2008 04:19 PM

I like the first one better. I find the last border with the stripe to be very distracting. It seems to take over the quilt and demand you look at it, taking away from the wonderful work you did with the top itself. That said, I think you'll find there are plenty of people who like the extra border. My suggestion is to walk away from it for a day or so, then walk back and take a good look at it. If you don't like the extra border and think it is too much, take it off. But you may find you like the extra color and the size of the quilt and keep it. I know, helpful, aren't I.

Oh how I love the sense of humor on here. :D  :D

isnthatodd 01-29-2008 04:22 PM

I agree that the strip border takes away from the beautiful pinwheels. A wider blue border, or just as it is would look great :!:

ccbear66 01-29-2008 04:31 PM

I seem to agree the striped border does take away from the quilt. I think I would go with a solid color border.

bebe 01-29-2008 04:31 PM

I think the strips distract from the pinwheel they stop spinning when you add more around them. Maybe using 1 solid or muted color would be best if u need to make larger.
The quilt is great looking!!!!!!!!

never let it be said i passed up an opportunity to be a contrary trouble maker.

i vote: keep the border already there. add a very narrow strip of solid all the way around to create a unified frame. then use the random as the binding. a narrower strip of it will show on the front, adding zest without distracting from the pinwheels. plus, the random colors and sizes will add interest to the back.

I like the same size border, in this case. Just a personal preference.

And here, our votes COUNT!!!

joy 01-29-2008 11:52 PM

My choice would be to take off those stripes.... they are spoiling the whole effect.... nice quilt top !!! You have done well... plain borders are best....

Rebecca Chambley 01-30-2008 01:25 AM

I agree, plain borders are best, BUT, why not the soft peachy orange, or the lavender. The blue makes me think BOY, and I thought it was a girl.

Rebecca Chambley 01-30-2008 01:30 AM

SORRY,,,,,Did'nt mean to throw a fly in the buttermilk,,,,,,,,,,,,

Knot Sew 01-30-2008 04:56 AM

I agree with what they all said. tehe Anyway you decide to finish it will look great.........very prettr and well done :D

Chele 01-30-2008 05:44 AM

Tiffany is right on the money! Looking at it today, I like the top border better! Yesterday, the left border was my favorite! I doubt you could do wrong with any of your choices!

Mamagus 01-30-2008 05:45 AM

I vote for borders... random.

ladymyste 01-30-2008 06:08 AM

I vote for no borders, the stripes just take to much away from the beautiful work you've done.

Just my thoughts, maybe a solid border would be best.

BDor 01-30-2008 09:31 AM

Might as well put my two cents worth in (or is that a penny for my thoughts) --whatever. Plain border the stripes take away from the pinwheel.

Uniform border with your pinwheels sized to fit in the corners. Lucky baby this is a beautiful quilt.

I would put the random border around the blue inner boarder. HS
