I did this design for some fabric that I just LOVE. It's soft, romantic and so pretty that I wanted large pieces of it in a simple pattern.

One has the lightest fabric in the diamond pattern around the center, the other has a medium fabric around the center with the lightest in the 4 squares around the center. I like both but I'm leaning towards the lightest 4 squares because the diamond pattern in the light emphasizes the 4 large light squares instead of the eye seeing it as a diamond.

What do you think? I haven't ordered the fabric yet so I need to decide on the placement for the yardage.

CrystalKicks 01-05-2010 08:45 PM

I vote for the first one :)

Jim's Gem 01-05-2010 09:53 PM

I vote for the first one as well. That will be beautiful!!!

Katrine 01-05-2010 09:55 PM

I think the first one too.

pittsburgpam 01-05-2010 10:11 PM

The more I consider it, the more I like the first one too. It breaks up the blue that is kind of blending all together in the second one.

cumberlandquiltchick 01-05-2010 10:20 PM

Are those toile fabrics!??!! LOVE those.... I like the first one. Can't wait to see more pics!

pittsburgpam 01-05-2010 10:34 PM

Yes, two of them are toile. I love them too. :-D The fabric is called Cotillion. I'm going with the first one and I ordered the fabric tonight.

It is such an easy pattern that it could probably be done in a day.

BlueChicken 01-05-2010 10:38 PM

Gorgeous... I like both! lol

Put them side by side on the screen of your computer, walk away and do something else, then come back in and look at the screen .... go with the thought that hits you first, you'll know which one you prefer. :-)

pittsburgpam 01-05-2010 10:53 PM

lol... That's kind of what I've been doing but not side by side. I keep coming back to looking at the one with more of the light, it draws my eye first.

There's your answer then. ;-)

I think it's the walking away bit... stop thinking about it, look at something else, then go back but pay attention and listen to the first instinct. We usually have excellent instincts, we just over think things and don't trust ourselves enough.

kluedesigns 01-05-2010 10:58 PM

i like the first one best.

pittsburgpam 01-05-2010 11:14 PM

The first one was my first instinct, the first one I did. I did second guess and thought maybe something else would look better....

I added a row of triangles on the outside because the edges looked unfinished.

Ooops... forgot the pic.

kluedesigns 01-05-2010 11:18 PM

i like the added triangles along the edge.

the negative space will be a great place for quilting when its done.

BlueChicken 01-05-2010 11:29 PM

So are you done yet?? ;-)

amma 01-06-2010 12:48 AM

I like the third one the best :D:D:D

I'll whip it out just as soon as the fabric gets here. :P

ESQMommy and I are going to a Sew Fun Friday at a local shop and I'm undecided whether I will work on DJ or something else. This is definately a candidate to get done in a day.

rootyr 01-06-2010 07:39 AM

I like the first one also!

Bevanger 01-06-2010 08:28 AM

1st one

katier825 01-06-2010 09:06 AM

Looks great with the added triangles in the last pic!

pittsburgpam 01-06-2010 09:14 AM

Yes, it finishes it off. I can hardly wait for the fabric to get here. I have 3 online orders that haven't arrived yet and I'm getting anxious but I just ordered this last night. I need to do a test of the Sugar Bowl blocks. The measurements in EQ6 are a bit strange and I need to figure out what size square to start with, sew up both sides of the center, then cut apart on both diagonals to get the half & half triangle corners for the center square.

Will be easiest to do them a little bigger than needed, sew them to the square, and then square up the block. Basically whatever size that block comes out to is what size the solid blocks need to be. The design is based on 10" blocks.

mytwopals 01-06-2010 11:48 AM

I'm probably too late, but I liked the second one better. But I do agree on the additional triangles finishing off the outside edges nicely. :D

pittsburgpam 01-06-2010 12:51 PM

Yeah, twopals, you're late and out-voted!! I do like both but the more I see them, the more I like the first one.

I ordered the fabric last night anyway. Unfortunately maybe because I am not sure if there is enough for the extra border. EQ over estimates the fabric requirements though, IMO, sometimes by a large amount.

BlueChicken 01-06-2010 03:31 PM

It does over estimate a lot doesn't it. It's hard to say by how much though and I'm paranoid about running out of fabric.

I'm jealous you're going to sew with esqmommy, you'll have a blast!

pittsburgpam 01-06-2010 06:48 PM

I know how you feel. I'd read about people meeting up and feel sorry for myself that there wasn't someone close by. Where we work is even closer together, close enough to meet for lunch... a long lunch. :D

It would be great to meet up with more people from the board.

pittsburgpam 01-06-2010 06:53 PM

My daughter and I are planning a trip to Rome and Paris in the fall and I was thinking I'd like to go to Australia some time too. Then I thought, Blue lives in New Zealand... Hmmmm. :-D

MaryAnna 01-06-2010 07:12 PM

It's the first one for sure!
Kind Regards,
MaryAnna

Jingle 01-07-2010 08:49 AM

I like the added triangles - finishes it off real nice. Good job !!!

Oklahoma Suzie 01-07-2010 04:42 PM

the first one.

The fabric came today and it is beautiful! I am in love with the soft blue and I can hardly wait to work on it. The border fabric is on back order but that's ok as long as I can actually get it. I usually put off doing borders anyway because I don't like doing it. :-D

k3n 01-14-2010 10:31 AM

That is pretty fabric - and I agree on the 1st layout with the extra row of triangles. Paris eh? That's about 4 hours from me! :D

Did my first test block tonight. I needed to figure out what size to cut the beige squares to go around the 7 5/8" on-point center square. I cut them at 9", sewed the light and dark together in the easy HST way (up both sides the middle), then cut diagonal both ways. It was just a bit larger than needed but that's what I wanted to square them up. About 1/4" inch was cut off each side.

The fabric is so pretty and I can hardly wait to see how it looks all together.

If only EQ6 could be a little more smart about piecing. No way was I going to cut out 8 triangles in the size it says and sew them together and think it's going to come out anywhere close to the accuracy of the easy HST.

You certainly do nice work! This will be lovely...and looks like we won't have to wait very long to see it! I noticed in view 3 that on the bottom and on the right side you "drew" a tiny border but left it off the top and the left side... I'd hope that you would include the tiny border to float the blocks away from the border...it just seems to make the border more important...but that's opinions for you...everybody has one or more...and it is your quilt so I'll just wait to see your completed vision...I do admire your work.

There isn't a border there in EQ6 but it shows the blocks slightly away from the two side, which is weird. I don't plan on a small inner border. The border fabric has small strips of beige and a larger strip of blue. I have to see it in person and see how the pattern repeat is but I would probably have the beige next to the quilt, then the blue, then a framing strip of beige again.

The 2 beige squares for the block are cut 7" square, not 9". :-D I just got all of them cut out. Now need to cut 12 each of the two blues, 13 of the large floral, 8 blue toile and 4 beige toile. It's a very simple design but the fabric is so pretty that I just wanted to use large pieces. I will have quite a bit left over for matching pillows.

And thank you!

I sewed the upper left of the first row together to see how it looks. I like it. :-) I'm at a stop tonight because I need to cut the lighter blue squares and I ran out of starch. I thought I had cut and sewed all the corner triangles but I realized that I only did half of what I need. Too anxious to get it done!

I can just imagine it on my four poster bed with frilly pillow shams made to match. My bedroom walls are like the darker beige and I have chocolate, pale plue, and cream towels in my bathroom.

I revised the pattern again. I don't have enough of the two beige fabrics to do the extra border of triangles and it did look strange without it so... went another direction with it. After playing around in EQ6 I came up with this.

I like it better than the large solid pieces and all but three of the beige center section corner blocks are done and two of the rows are sewn together. It might be done today!
