Here are some pictures of a wall-hanging I did "back in the day" (okay, so maybe it was less than 3 years ago), when I did not understand the whole "SQUARING UP" idea. Recently, I finished the hand quilting, tried to square it up for binding, and really made a "boo-boo"! I cut the bottom as square, even though the interior patern is clearly NOT square (if you look closely, you will see the droop toward the center of the bottom). In a bit of a panic, I cut the bottom again to .... oh, I forget what I thought I was doing ~ thus, the "panic"!

Now, I have a wall-hanging with MANY hours of work that I don't know how to finish. Ideas and suggestions, please!!!

p.s.
This was made for hubby, and he had a bit of a hand in the design, so the idea of tossing it in the dumpster is not an option.

Here is the "droop", emphasized by the stupid cut! :-(

Here is the "big picture". Sorry if it is blurry.

Very Pretty wall hanging . Can't really help with the droop, but there are lots of people here that will be able to help you...

Your wall hanging is so pretty. I can't seem to see what you are showing us. But, I would certainly keep it hanging up. It's just lovely.
:D :D :D

I would try blocking it on a carpet - dampen it, lay a sheet on top of the carpet, and use pushpins to get the sizes even, then let it dry in place. You might not get it 100% even on the first try, but it will be greatly improved.

If it is a wall hanging, it would almost be worth it to make a wood frame out of furring strips and staple it.

It looks (after a close insprction) that theupper red sashing is a tiny bit off so it threw the blue into the curve, can you take off the blue and resew it blocking the top red first? It is beautiful by the way at first glance I could see nothing wrong. Most people wouldn't notice.

Follow Moonpi's directions and try blocking it. I blocked a much smaller quilt and it squared up beautifully. Otherwise just use that baby and enjoy it. You made it special and it's still special! Perhaps a bit more quirky than you like but it's still special.
P.S. I can't see the droop from here! Looks mighty near perfect in California!

sewjoyce 03-05-2009 02:58 PM

It looks fine from here! (Very pretty -- I love it!)

littlehud 03-05-2009 03:41 PM

I'm not sure what the problem is. Maybe someone else can help.

Sharon M 03-05-2009 03:59 PM

well....from central Indiana it looks fine! I think you are being way to critical. However if you are a perfectionist I understand. Try the advice given earlier and see what happens, however if you should decide you just can't live with it my husband said he would gladly take it off of your hands for you :D

hannahsmom 03-05-2009 04:02 PM

I dont think that it droops bad! I think it is not that noticeable. There are a few different things that I would consider doing if it were mine..... I would follow moonpies advice or add another boarder or even get a frame (of course a thicker one) and sitck it in there with a mat or even leave it. Good luck to you.. it looks great!!

sandpat 03-05-2009 05:02 PM

I would try blocking it using moonpi's advice, then I would just bind it and move on down the road. Your DH will love it no matter what because you made it for him and you will just look at it as another little bump in the learning curve of quilting.

I have a stack of quilts here..from my first ones (06 to recently) It is obvious that I am improving....so just look at it as a good thing. Since you did this awhile back...you are just better at it now...that doesn't make that wall hanging "bad" though. I like it!

Quilt4u 03-05-2009 05:07 PM

I love it.

sewnsewer2 03-05-2009 06:03 PM

I don't notice the droop, all I see is a beautiful piece!

gcathie 03-05-2009 08:17 PM

I would square it up the best I could put the binding on and chaulk it up as a lesson learned and not say a word to anyone......since we don't see the problem.....:-)

jacquemoe 03-05-2009 08:24 PM

You can try putting it in some cold water then hand squeeze the water out and try to square it up by laying it out flat and pinning it until it is dry. Hope this make some sense to you.

i would put a bottom sleeve in there, wet the way jackie said, and then rehang to dry with an additional wood or pvc rod in the bottom to 'stretch and dry'.

Great looking wallhanging!!! I would probably just bind it and be done, we all are supposed to learn from our experiences and chalk it up to experience. Personally, I don't see your concern, your husband will love it because you made it for him and he had a hand in designing it.

Sharon Schamber has a great video on her site that fully explains how to block and shrink blocks that are not the correct size when you finish. I recommend that yo ugo go to her site and have a look. I tried what she said to do and it worked really well for me.

LindaR 03-07-2009 07:00 AM

I would definately try and block it. Maybe the borders need to be redone also....love the pattern

Donna Mae 03-07-2009 11:14 AM

I can't seem to see a droop!!

Very nice wall hanging.

I'm brand new to this message board but I had a comment. First I love love love your light house quilt!!! It looks good to me. I like Elenor Burns 25 mile rule--Hang your quilt on the door and drive by going 25mph-if you can't see the flaws it's good! Also when you are curled up in a special quilt, there are no flaws.

Margie 03-12-2009 08:23 AM

Looks good...didnt know the 25 mile rule but for anything I make...I think it would have to be 50 miles. Only God is perfect, I think it is beautiful. I say just enjoy it.

Bevanger 03-12-2009 12:40 PM

Not sure what's wrong with it, but I sure like it ALOT! :D

miss thimble 03-12-2009 04:08 PM

My favorite trick when i can't get a quilt to be perfectly squared up is to not try to. I just cut all around the quilt in a wavy kind of design- almost like scallops- and then bind it. It looks " artistic". Not sure if it will work with your particular problem, but the quilt is beautiful and worth trying anything.

cnolan 03-12-2009 08:57 PM

THANK YOU, everyone, for your suggestions, and especially your compliments!!! I have decided to just "suck it up" (as hubby says),
bind it as is, and put it back up on it's hanger.

Now I just have to find that darn blue fabric in the mountain of my stash! :P

Celeste 03-12-2009 11:11 PM

That is beautiful! Is it applique or panels? What is the name of pattern or pattern please?

cnolan 03-13-2009 09:43 AM

The blocks with the large designs (top and bottom on the left and center on the right) are panels. The other blocks are pieces that hubby and I put together in a random kind of way that we thought looked pretty good.

Thanks again for all the comments and encouragement!!!
