dakotamaid 06-06-2012 11:35 AM

Looks like your strip (her dk blue, your light), was too wide. I'm not sure what the width should be, maybe someone else knows.

grma33 06-06-2012 11:40 AM

said the strips were 1 1/2 in the post which they both are
my brain is fried on this! LOL

Can't help with this one but if all else fails, Quilter's Cache has one with templates or paper piecing.

I am doing this block today. I am using the Quilter's Cache PP pattern. Your second block looks like the finished block they have. I went to your link and the block looks good to me. Maybe I don't understand the problem. Looks like you did a very good job on this star. BrendaK

i`m off to get the templates as much as i don`t like them think it will be easier
Thanks Gale

What dimensions are your blue pieces - they should be 1.5" high, and 1 3/4 inches on the short side, 4 3/4 inches on the long side.

It looks to me like the seam has not been well pressed; that might be causing some 'shortness' of the blue.

Looks like you didn't line it up correctly, you should have dog ears on both ends. Why not try the paper pieced one?

grma33 06-06-2012 03:17 PM

Dog ears that`s probably my problem!
will take apart and resew!lol

So glad the block is working for you......... Just hate when something you are working on doesn't click. Blood pressure goes WAY Up..... and they say sewing and quilting is relaxing.... LOL
Looking forward to seeing your blocks.

You can also check out Deb Tucker's "Rapid Fire Hunter's Star". She has a video on her website: http://www.studio180design.net/videos/?id=2 . Her ruler is more expensive than the one you posted but you get several sizes on one ruler and she uses a technique similar to Roolen's. I don't like using paper templates either:)

Quilterfay 06-07-2012 08:11 AM

Paper piecing the hunter star is so much easier than doing it with the rulers. It whips up in no time doing it PP'd. I am I am sure you can find a Hunter Star paper piecing pattern on the web. Just print out the pattern once ........ then take a bunch of paper and using your sewing machine with no thread in it sew along the lines. Now you have all your paper piecing patterns and they fold easier and they are easier to remove.

Hope this all makes sense.

The paper pieced pattern is on the same site as the paper templates were. I think she'd rather not paper piece. I suggested that twice--some folks just don't like to paper piece...

ruck9085 06-07-2012 08:40 AM

They look fine to me. I think you can make this pattern any size you want to. My blocks for the one I made were 18 inches. Its really up to you to decide how big or how small to make it.

duckydo 06-08-2012 05:23 AM

I would love to do one of these but it does look complicated, so I guess b4 I start one I had better get the templates... good luck

Do you have her ruler? It is so much easier with the ruler. Instructions with lots of pics come with the ruler. I am in the process of making a hunter's star right now with a 6" finished block. For triangles you need strips 6" wide WOF, for the trapezoids you need strips 1 3/4" wide WOF & for the accents (stars/diamonds) you need strips 2 1/4" wide WOF. This is for a 3 colour block. For my block I have: 1 trapezoid & 1 triangle in the same colour, 2nd trapezoid & triangle in another colour & for the accents -stars/diamonds I have a 3rd colour. This is a little hard to explain here but hopefully this will help. PM me & I may be able to give you some additional help.

Just to add, I have Deb Tucker's ruler & it is a BIG help. When I had problems I just went to her video & it was a huge help also. It is a little more money but well worth it IMHO. I am 1/2 way thru my quilt & really have had no major problems to speak of. Try Deb's video & I am sure that will be a big help.

callen hows the fire situation? Hope much better. We lived 30 years in Thompson manitoba and fires were sure a threat every summer.
As to the block you sure don`t need a special ruler just a 45% I just finished! Boy were those trapezoids ever hard to sew to the diamonds took them apart too many times to count but well worth it.
I feel if you can do this block you can do anything!
Yes pp maybe is the way to go but I wanted to try just cutting but ended up using templates which din`t turn out to bad.

You didn't make your trapezoids wide enough (the blue pieces), that's all. Notice where Roolen put her Companion Ruler in her tutorial.

I know you don't need the ruler but it makes it so much easier & her instructions are very good & her video is even better. I love this Hunter's Star & would do another again anytime.
Yes, the forest fire situation is much better but unfortunately some of the fire has gone underground & could smolder there for weeks or months & when the conditions become just right we could be right back where it all started. Hopefully that will not happen. We keep hoping for rain but only have received a little. We are expecting extremely high temps starting tomorrow (high 30's) so don't know what that will bring. We sure appreciated all the help & prayers we received & will be eternally grateful to ALL the people who bravely fought these fires & continue to do so.
Thank you for asking.
Carol
P.S. Like your block very much !!
