I bought these FQs because I fell in love with them. I was planning to make a sampler with them but am stuck stuck STUCK on what colour to have the background and sashings.
Please help me!!!!!! |
Try Black or Dr Forest green. I like the pop between back and the bright colors.
I am not an experienced quilter, but I think I would use a lighter shade of one of the colors you like best. With that many colors, I think a white, or white on white (maybe off white) would make the colors pop. Then the sashing could be one of the colors.
I agree that the black will make it pop! But if you wanted to make a more spring/summer quilt, I would go with the aqua shown in a few of the fabrics, or the purple. Nice choices!
I think black would be great. But if you're not into black a soft lavender, green, or blue would be nice.
I'd vote for black, it will show up all the plaid colors and look terrific.
What about light blue? Or black if you want a darker quilt?
Maybe eggplant (aubergine) or burgundy?
A little less harsh looking than black. |
Audition colors and see what you like best. Just lay out a yard of black, one of dk green, one of white, one of any other color you have and lay your fats on them. Walk away, leave the room. When you come back in stop at the doorway and see which one you like best. Always look from a distance when auditioning sashing, background, etc.
I would pick out colors from your plaids - so maybe a purple or yellow or green, orange - whatever - like they say audition the colors - I bet any of those colors will work. good luck.
Navy blue would be nice.
I agree with Otis and I lean toward the Orange for one of the colors.
Best to play with the colors and look at them from a distance. Let us know what you com up with. I love your choices. |
I don't think that I have ever seen plaid fat quarters before!
Oh, now I see that you are from the UK. Nice selection of fat quarters that you have there! |

I had a thought to maybe make the blocks and then see what you think??? With the beautiful array of colors you have I'm sure it won't be a problem to come up with the sashings.
I would audition the aqua and that goldy-orange color on the far right. The aqua because it is common to most of your pieces, and the orange because it complements the blues and purples. Can't wait to see what it looks like.

OK, this might not win me any prizes, but what about doing a color wash? Arrange your plaids so that they range from darkest to lightest across the top diagonally. Then for the sashing, do it the opposite so that the light plaids have dark sashing and the dark plaids have light sashing. Does that make sense?
I think that black would set those colors off so well.
I think black or dark blue would look great!
