That is so cute!

Very clever. Like everyone else I have questions! Do you make the shirt then applique it down on the block?

That's what I say, too. Good for you for not letting her down. It is adorable and she looks very happy. You are a good friend. :)

"One of my dearest friends" .... so, her hubby was well-known to you as well? .... what stories you must be coming up with as you fold each new shirt !....

No neckties? :-) If she has some of those you could use, she wouldn't need buttons ...
Looks as though she is having a good time - making lemonade instead of sucking on lemons these days .... Good for all of you ... that's what friends are for....

Have a second easy-pattern in mind for her, for when you finish this one.... It seems like the shirts are using up only a fraction of a full-sized shirt ... and if "the quilt bug" bites her, she will have plenty enough to make a simple scrappy quilt to keep her involved in the art ..... without having to invest in a lot of new fabric right away .... Maybe you could give it a kick-start...

And she might be more inclined to wrap herself up in a scrappy quilt on a more regular basis rather than taking a chance on wearing out this one that may be a little more fragile and more special ....

just a thought.
