Pictures to follow....My question is on the horse fabric to face the back. If I cut the salvage edge off , the patterns won't match up on the pattern. Can I just over lap this and leave it like that? I would like the pattern to match? I don't know what to do......

I think the biggest draw back it will be a little harder to quilt, but is a do-able

I'd make it match and work with it the best I can. I was always told to cut off the selvage but a friend said in her last class she was told to leave it on. Love the applique on the star. Backing is a great choice.

A beautiful quilt!

Make it match!

Thanks for your opinion, every little bit helps. Thanks again........

It looks like if you trim off the selvage you won't have enough of a seam allowance to match up the print. In this case I would leave on the seam allowance and match the print. Generally, you remove the seam allowance because it is of a denser, thicker weave that shrinks at a different rate when washed. You might have to iron that seam a little when it comes out of the wash but I could live with that. I say go for it.

I love the idea of keeping it matching, I think it could work...This quilt is going to be beautiful when it's done, I hope you will post pics when you've finished.

Love the front block work! :) Fabric for back is great too~

Great roping quilt. Love all the pictures you included. Sorry no idea about your question.

If you include the selvages I would suggest snipping every 6 inches or so. I was taught to do this when the repeat needed to be matched. As someone else said, the selvages won't shrink at the same rate as the rest of the fabric.

Get some fabric paint, dark brown, ligt brown, green and tan and paint in the grass and bushes. Or applique/draw a tree in that spot. got to find some way to hide it once it's matched.

I'd make it match.
What about quilts and things made WITH just selvedges? I guess they shrink at the same rate as each other. I always likes the selvedge when sewing clothes, because if used right it could mean one less fold in hemming. Snipping is good advice. |
IMHO...do your matching then trim the seam allowance down to 1/4" and snip as suggested to give it some wiggle room when finished.
Looks wonderful so far! |
Love the colors and design ... nice quilt

I think I'd leave the selvedge on and have it match. Might be a little harder to quilt but should still be do-able. Very pretty quilt.

Gorgeous quilt!!

It's wonderful. The problem of the salvage edge is the shrinkage when washed. Years ago this was an even a bigger problem than it is now. Clip it every half inch on the very edge and you should be fine.

Love it!

Very nice.

There is a little trick to make the selvege easier to work with. I would go for it. It you ever have to use a selvege edge in a project you can...
after you sew the seam clip the selvege about every one to two inches along the seam and about half the depth of the selvege. This will release the tension of the selvege so it will lie flatter and not pucker when quilting. Hope this helps a little for future projects. Your quilt is very nice and I love how it all works together. |
