I do because the top and bottom meet in the middle and it looks sloppy without the lace. Plus you will see the pins without the lace being there. You can omit the ribbon and just make a bow at the top and hot glue it on. I Just recall that the ribbon hanger as just a bow didn't stay on as well without it going all the way around.
You can also use less pins by using the overlap to your advantage. If you have one end that overlaps another take the first pin out and slip the other fabric lip over, then pin both together. That way you also don't deflect one pin with another possibly making the fabric not "sit" correctly.

Charlene, you've giving me a new idea for my ornaments by using all one fabric. I never really thought about it but I really like it. Here are some of mine. Thanks, your ornaments are pretty.

i have made those also last year i wanted to make a fancy one so i used fancy silk christmas fabrics they turned out great but they were very costly to make the fabric was nearly 20 a yard.

Makes my fingers hurt to look at them. Doesn't it take a lot of small pins? But they are so pretty!

I use either a leather thimble or regular one. No finger pain.
