Here is what I have done so far. I think it looks horribly messy. All the stitching is crooked and wavy...but at this point...it's adding serious character to my quilt. I have enough of a border to do a nice large scallop border. I have an idea of how I'm going to do it, and with the help of my Better Homes and Gardens Complete Guide to Quilting, I have step by step instructions.

For those of you who have done large scallop borders...what are your tips and secrets to a beautiful border?

I like the pattern. I've tried it a few times but it is difficult for me. How big is your quilt?

It's 51" L, 38 1/2" W through the centers.

I love that pattern & you did a great job on it! I have done scalloped borders on 2 different tablecovers & 2 matching runners. They are really easy to do, just remember that your binding MUST be on the bias! That way it works itself around the curves. Personally. I wouldn't put scallops on that design. It is rather geometric & scallops are kind of soft. I might consider Prairie points instead?? Although I have never done them?? Maybe just a version of the design that you could work into the border? It's a personal thing, after all. Good luck in whatever you decide! :P

I drew up the scallop on paper (exam table paper I got from the medical supply store). I measured the length & width, then figured approximately how far apart I thought they should be. Needed to be sure they ended on the upswing towards the corners. I folded the paper everywhere it extended out and hand drew the lines. It was pretty time consuming, but worked well. I then cut the paper and used it as a template, drew the line on w/chalk pencil (mechanical kind). I quilted it and attached the binding to the front BEFORE I cut the scallop out. I did not have any issues with distorting the bias this way. I loved the look so much I splurged for the wavy ruler. I haven't used it yet, but have a quilt in the works that I will be using it on.

something I thought of later.....when you get to binding the INSIDE curve between the scallops, pull the fabic so it is almost straight when sewing on the machine. It will relax whe you let it go & when you hand-sew the back, it will be in the right place! Make sense?
