I pieced all the blocks together and this is the result. Still don't know what I'm going to do about a border. Would love some opinions!

Thank you all for your support and encouragement on this first project of mine. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. It has some flaws, but I believe when it comes to crafts and anything handmade, flaws create character in the piece.

Blocks set out before final piecing.

Hubby holding up the top, all pieced together. I'm so proud!

Layin on the couch..for the idea of the size.

You have done a wonderful job!!!! Your blocks, piecing, fabrics, WOW :D :D I would never have known this was your first quilt. :D :D

I can't help you on your borders....I really struggle with that myself.

barnbum 04-09-2009 06:13 PM

Hey--CONGRATS!! You learned a lot from piecing all those different squares!! You have every reason to be proud. Hooray!! :D :D :D

Borders? I'm not sure... I'll have to look again...

Okay--I'm back--I guess, because of all the different colors, I'd do a log cabin border (one side, then the next touching one, rather than opposite sides at the same time) and have each side a different fabric from the quilt.

shaverg 04-09-2009 06:13 PM

Maybe a wide pink border with black binding?

gcathie 04-09-2009 06:16 PM

Wow glad you finished your quilt and didn't give up.....you have done a nice job......

As for a border I think I would go with a black border with a multi colored rectangle border of the colors that are in your blocks and then another black border.....just food for thought .......good luck choosing the right one for you.....:-)

Looks great. You did a wonderful job for your first one!!!

You did a wonderful job on your first quilt!!! Congrats--I would never have known it was your first if you had not said so! I am sorry---I have no advice for borders....

VERY nice work! Great job, Jen! I like it very much. Black border would be cool. White would also work. Or pink like one of the colors in the quilt since there seems to be a lot of pink. White border, black binding. Black border, pink binding? I don't know, but it's pretty!

Looking great! You should be proud! I would put a medium size black and white print border and then a wider black border

Butterflyspain 04-10-2009 01:25 AM

Heh well done for a first time, I would neverhave known.

Borders, well I am not so good at those but perhaps a pink and black frame to it.

That is a fantabulous job for ANY quilt, let alone a first! :D

As for borders, I like the idea of some kind of pieced border using fabrics from the blocks maybe flying geese? Then definitely black binding.

Bevanger 04-10-2009 06:00 AM

blzzrdqueen 04-10-2009 09:09 AM

Thank you all so much for your kind words! It means alot to me to know I can come to a place and get support from wonderful people like you all!

I've decided I'm going to do a flying geese border using black as the base and all the colors in the quilt as the corners. I think that will really put the finishing touch on it. Then I will do black for the binding.

Beautiful job on your what...1st quilt????? I'm not sure I believe that, but you did great with it. If you are going to do the FG...I really like that idea...do you have a favorite or preferred way to do them? I did tons for a quilt this year and I found Paper piecing to be the easiest for me. Good luck and continue to have fun with it, I think it will look great with FG!

I haven't tried paper-piecing yet. I'll try that when I start a new quilt. And yes, this was my first. I'm pretty good at teaching myself how to do things and I had alot of great advice from the people here. My mother-in-law was my inspiration to start quilting and I got all my block patterns from quilterscache.com.

omak 04-10-2009 10:35 AM

Your idea of flying geese as a border is a really good choice. The colors will POP!
Keep going ... you are too good to stop now! LOL

Debbie1 04-10-2009 11:59 AM

Your quilt turned out beautifully - no one would ever think this is your first quilt. I'm not sure what I'd do for a border. I like the idea about using colors from your block with black. Share the photo when you finish!

TeresaP 04-10-2009 02:49 PM

Your idea for the border sounds great. I'm sure htat will finish it off and bring all the units together.

Keep up the good work.
