I did make up the pattern myself. I bought the hexagon "ruler"/template at JoAnn's and was just playing around with it. I used fabric from my stash that I thought looked good and went from there. It is a "partial seam" method but quite easy to do.

not difficult to hoop at all. Just loosen the hoop to accomodate the density of the quilt, batting, and back. Then tighten hoop as needed to hold taut.
No problem with the weight of the quilt pulling because I used my huge kitchen table to hold the weight.

Do you use a stablizer, or does the thickness keep it stable?

No, I do not use stabilizer. the thickness of the quilt top, batt and backing are enough.
