Hexies for a Friend

3 Attachment(s)
An older member of our guild asked if I would be willing to put together some hexies that she had started. She is a sweet lady and, due to Covid and no access to a computer, is somewhat cutoff from her quilting buddies. I decided to help her out and also spend an afternoon or two a month, with her. She is very happy with the results and is planning on hand quilting the tops.

I was sorry but the first thing I had to do, was undo all the hand stitching she had done. There were significant tension and seam issues. (Did I mention that my friend is a 'little' older than me?) I knew it would take more time than I wanted to spend, to hand stitch everything, so I cheated. The hexies are all machine pieced. I can now sew a Y seam in my sleep!! With only 2 cushion tops left to piece, this project is almost finished. But I will continue to drop by for tea and stories about the past. Thanks for looking.

I love to hear stories like this. The hexie sure look good now.

In my quilting group there was an older lady named Connie. She never called me by my name, but always called me Blondie. I used to dye my hair before Covid but now it’s silver. She told me one time, she hoped I didn’t mind her calling me that. I told her I didn’t. Our group hadn’t been meeting much over the last year or two, but she had not been at any when I went. I ended up running into her, in the grocery department, at Walmart. How she recognized me with mask on and hair gray, I don’t know. It was good to see her and she told me her husband’s altzhiemiers was worse so she couldn’t leave him to meet with us to quilt. We exchanged a few pleasantries then she said she needed to get back to him. I’m glad we saw each other unexpectedly that day, because a few weeks later, one of the ladies in our group called me to tell me Connie died unexpectedly. We wondered what would become of her husband. I will always have fond memories of Connie and no one else will ever call me the special name of Blondie that she called me.

Toogie,
I loved your story about your friend Connie. That meeting with her at Walmart was not a coincidence......I believe God ordained it. I know you are so happy that you took the time to visit with her that day at Walmart. Blessings on you.

GingerK: what a dear friend you are to lend your friendship, time and talent to an elderly friend. I'm sure the time spent with her was as much a gift as the quilting you did.
Toogie: So sorry for the loss of your friend.
