OK, so it came to me in my dream state the other night (though in black and white) and I could stop my new quilter self from cutting and playing. The thing is, now that I'm done it became instantly recognizable even though I don't know its name. So can anyone out there tell me what the name of this block is?

It didn't line up 100% but thought I did pretty good for a novice. :D

I don't know the name of it either except there is an hour glass in the middle but I sure do like it.

I dreamed it in black and white, but didn't have any black material washed before the itch hit home. I'm thinking one in each corner of a quilt top would be nice. What? Maybe a nice trio of large whole pieced quilted panels down the center? White, black, white or some such?

amma 08-25-2007 06:20 PM

I do not know the name, either but, you do a great job! Piecing those bias's are not easy.... I really like your colors in this and they make the design really stand out :D

ceannastahr 08-25-2007 06:25 PM

I know I ve seen this to but was done in strips. then cut the trianbles and sew together

Steve 08-25-2007 06:32 PM

Exactly what I did too.

SandraJennings 08-25-2007 07:12 PM

It seems like a variation of a Nancy Cabot hourglass square, but the center is different.... It is beautiful in the colors you have....and would be astounding in black and whites....Good luck. :D

lin 08-25-2007 07:29 PM

You've been fooling us along haven't you Steve? You're not really a novice quilter are you?

That's a beautiful, well-made block no matter what name it goes by! Maybe it's an original. Henceforth it shall be called "Steve".

Judy Gail 08-25-2007 09:06 PM

I like the black/white, white/black idea --- very graphic. I agree, it doesn't look like a novice block to me.

Thanks for the compliments. I was going to ask how does one square a thing like this? I tried to run it under the machine following ideas I learned from the squares, but it isn't quite the same. Is there a way to pin it? I figured that maybe you all would have some thoughts on it? I really like the patch but want it a little tighter since the black and white would show every little flaw to an even greater degree.

amma 08-25-2007 09:39 PM

Yes, pinning on this kind of block would help line up your seams. Also pressing the seams in the proper directions so that your intersections lock into place. I am not good at explaining, but I am willing to bet you get a good explanation on pinning this from one of the others, soon. When you sew these together, if you have pressed one seam up on the one piece and on the other the seam down, they want to naturally nestle together, and that does help with alignment. Can't wait to see this in black and white :)

ShellyQ 08-25-2007 10:13 PM

That looks stunning Steve and a black and white would look equally dramatic. Looks like you've done a pretty good job of lining it up to me. the only people gonna look at any thing with a magnifying glass are the quilt police and their opinion don't count. Sounds like you are well and truly bit with the bug :P enjoy

mary705 08-26-2007 01:58 AM

Beautiful job Steve!

Country Quilter 08-26-2007 03:24 AM

Great block! Whenever I have intersections to match up I pin....I've never gotten in the hang of pressing to one side...I press my seams open.

Wish I could dream up such pretty blocks!

Knot Sew 08-26-2007 07:32 AM

It looks like a string quilt to me ............look at some of these :D

That's a great block, Steve. Keep dreaming!! :!:

mimisharon 08-26-2007 09:46 AM

Great Job!! Beautiful!!

tia sarah 08-26-2007 11:18 AM

ruth, thats what i thought to. it looks like the string quilts ya'll do.

vicki reno 08-27-2007 05:32 AM

Really nice work! Maybe its the spider web? I know it looks familiar, but not sure of the name. Looks really nice though.

mary705 08-27-2007 05:42 AM

I know it's not the spider web, cause I'm working on one of those now, but still very nice work.

Steve 08-27-2007 11:32 AM

So somewhere between an hour glass and a spider web, sounds like a tangled time to me. I can almost hear the fly crying "Help me... help me."

sherriah 08-27-2007 11:40 AM

Whatever it is called,
it sure is pretty! :)

Steve 08-27-2007 11:47 AM

Thanks, I'm sifting through block books and sites trying to find the name still and imagine I'll eventually run across it. It's amazing how much can be done with a little imagination. :D

Knot Sew 08-27-2007 12:36 PM

look a lot like these http://www.quiltingboard.com/posts/list/847.page with a little log cabin  thrown in

Norah 08-27-2007 05:54 PM

Steve, I think you should name it. Also, in another post, you were wanting us to name some great male quilters. Steve comes to mind. You are really exceptionaly, and not because you are a man.

Steve 08-27-2007 10:45 PM

Thanks, and aw shucks Norah, but I see that the quilts Ruth linked have the same pattern even though not two toned, so indeed there is a block out there bearing some name already. :D

amma 08-27-2007 11:24 PM

I have seen a number of blocks similar to yours, but they all have a different name. It appears that the artist who creates them gets to name them....... I can't wait to see a picture when you get it done and also to know what you decided to name it :D

ozarkgal 08-28-2007 10:51 AM

Very nice, black & white. How about black with white poke-a-dots and white with black poke-a-dots....for the adventurer in you.

Steve 08-28-2007 11:57 AM

Mmm, I like polka dots, but they wouldn't really mesh with the picture I have in my head. The trouble is of course that you've implanted a seed, so I'm sure they are bound to come out in the work somewhere. HA!

mary quilter 08-28-2007 01:35 PM

" Tangled Time" sounds like a great name to me. Either for the block or the quilt.

vicki reno 08-29-2007 04:55 AM

Steve: I just picked up the June 2007 issue of American Patchwork and Quliting and saw something vey similar to yours. Maybe thats why you thought you had seen simila patterns. This one had more colors than yours, but I like the simplicity of yours better. They called the article hourglass with a twist. Its interesting reading, but I still love the blue n yours. I love anything in blue and yours definitely appeals to me. I'd love to see your black and white one too. It'll be awesome, I'm sure. But have to warn you, if you haven't already figured this out, QUILTING is ADDICTIVE :!:
