I cut the water for my boat quilt too short. I got lazy and thought it might be ok. Now that I have finished it, I don't like the gap. Is there anything that I can do other than starting all over or just living with it. It is hand quilted except for the borders.

It doesn't look like you've quilted that red border down yet, why not take off the red border and move it in a bit? That's what I would do. JMHO
It's very cute though!

I think I would add maybe some fish applique on the water and one to be on the gap.....just a thought.

trueimage 09-06-2011 07:53 PM

Applique a fish or a turtle or some kind of aquatic critter!

roda 09-06-2011 07:55 PM

Maybe applique a little dingy boat over the gap

anniec55 09-06-2011 07:57 PM

Can you not cut a piece to fit and hand stitch it in, sorta like an applique? Just big enough to fill it in..... Think it would work. you might even cut a small piece of "Steam a Seam Light" to make sure you keep placement accurate while you stitch.

That's what I'd try, too.

This sounds like a good solution.
Very cute quilt.

LeeAnn 09-06-2011 08:10 PM

If it bothers you I would move the border! Adorable quilt.

sharon b 09-06-2011 08:23 PM

I was thinking appliqueing a fish

That would probably be the easiest

Charlee 09-06-2011 08:25 PM

This sounds like the best bet. Great quilt!

MadQuilter 09-06-2011 08:27 PM

I'd move the border too.

kristen0112 09-06-2011 08:30 PM

Dark blue perm. Marker? Or you could sew blue rick-rack around the edge.

alikat110 09-06-2011 08:41 PM

Applique an anchor, whale, fish, turtle......anything nautical!!! Cute quilt

BETTY62 09-06-2011 08:43 PM

What a cute quilt.

cherylynne 09-07-2011 01:19 AM

Cute quilt, but I know that that gap is bothering you. I think that I would applique a little extension onto the blue water and then put the border back on .

Yooper32 09-07-2011 01:24 AM

A little gray whale appliqued on that spot and into the border would fix it and add a bit of whimsy.

jmabby 09-07-2011 01:50 AM

I would do as someone suggested, hand quilt in a small piece

fabric_fancy 09-07-2011 02:58 AM

take the border off since nothing is quilted yet

QuiltnNan 09-07-2011 03:38 AM

ditto

That's what I was thinking. :)

Add a pier post.

kraftykimberly 09-07-2011 06:20 AM

For me there are no "mistakes" in quilting, I like to call them "opportunities to be creative" and roll with that. It's worked well for me so far and I have now have a nice stash of "mistake-free" finished quilts :-) In your instance I love the ideas mentioned by other posters that suggest some type of applique (jumping fish, anchor, turtle), just use your imagination !!! Have fun with it and dont stress.

CorneliaVa 09-07-2011 07:09 AM

My be just my imagination, but if you take that side border off, and smooth down the top, and reposition that border, I think it would come out right....

A whale! Extending into the border.

I like the idea of some extra wide rick-rack! That would really jazz it up!
Please show us when you are finished "fixing" it! :)

I like this idea. One on the top and bottom rows on the right and on the middle row on the left.

LadyElisabeth 09-07-2011 08:53 AM

Very cute boats, love the pattern

Ramona Byrd 09-07-2011 09:03 AM

Put a fish there with a flag with name and date on it.

BrendaY 09-07-2011 09:38 AM

If you are a "serious" quilter, take that sucker apart and do it right! but if you're a "casual" quilter (like me...) just sew something over it and get on with the next quilt. You learned something, didn't you? So have fun!

quiltmouse 09-07-2011 10:20 AM

at lunch. did not read all pages.

Open up the border, and splice in more water. looker-atters will look at the boats & never notice.

Or move the whole border. You would only have to detach the top and bottom seam where borders touch. Don't remove the red border, just re-sew the seam wide enough to grab the gap. trim seam to 1/4". re-sew border at top & bottom. That border will be a tad bit narrower than the other 3, but, no quilt police allowed! LOL...

or applique on top...pier posts or seagulls.

I think erstan947 has a great idea. Sort of 3-D.

mary quilting 09-07-2011 03:27 PM

I would move the border over

1000projects 09-07-2011 03:29 PM

Tiny little blue patch!!!

Johanna Fritz 09-07-2011 03:35 PM

applique a fish or something over that open space. You can always fuse it down too.

young at heart 09-07-2011 03:50 PM

Hey, you're not happy! Then fix it however you choose. If you're not happy with it now you never will be. Later you'll remember how clever you were to be so creative!
