Wow we have a lot of snow forecasted for tomorrow, perhaps I could get something done. Actually I am making quilted Christmas balls for next year and I must say they are addictive. My grandaughter came home after school and watched me for about 15 minutes, asked if she could try one and she had one half done before dinner. We have such fun crafting..

I live 75 miles west of Savannah. Still lots of ice on the trees. No melting yet.........low temps forecast for tonight..... Will probably still be icy trees and roads tomorrow.
Used my Lil Twister rulers for the first time today........Maybe another ice and snow day tomorrow and I will finish my quilt top.

I have just finished a big quilt so I spent the day cleaning up my sewing room and praying we don't lose our power. We have sleet now.

Beautiful quilts! What is the name of the pattern you used on the Missionary quilt? It rocks, but I'm not familiar with the pattern.

Today, I decided it was time to deal with the laundry, so I folded and put all the clean clothes away that accumulated last week while I was working on my postage stamp quilt.

And yes, I spent a couple of hours cutting 1.75" strips to cut them across 35 at a time. I got two groups of 35 different strips cut crosswise 1.75" 22x35x2= 1,520 squares.
It's a lot of work, but it also means that when I collect enough different squares, I can make a rather large charm postage stamp quilt, and if all the squares are cut, I can make 22 charm-type couch potato covers without cutting another square! That's the good days if you're addicted to postage stamp quilts...

Keep up the good work. Your plush quilts are real cuties.[/quote]

The pattern used was a free one from Maywood Studio done by Jackie Robinson called Swirling Lulu. The pattern size is 58" x 71.5". You could add more blocks or more borders. This pattern was meant to highlight a new fabric line, but you could use anything as I did.

Are your fleece blankets just one layer of fleece, or are they a 3 piece layered sandwich? I made a 2 layer fleece blanket but had a very difficult time getting the 2 pieces of fleece to measure the same size. Everytime I measured the pieces, they changed!!! I want to make more, so help please.

My blankets this time were just one layer of fleece. There are a few tricks to working with fleece. The first year I tried it was difficult too. And cutting them accurately can be a real pain if you do not have a large table to lay them out flat and smooth. I find for a double layer blanket that it helps me to get them straight and even in size if I lay them out flat in the way that I want them put together. So then I am cutting through two layers only and those layers will both be the same. Fleece is wide and bulky but it can be done once you get the hang of it.

So, I would lay one right side down to the floor or table and the other right side up (insides together). Then gently pat, smooth until there are no wrinkles and selvedge edges are even.

The tricky part is trimming evenly. You could slide your mat along underneath and trim with a ruler and rotary cutter (60 mm works better than 45 mm, but I have never had one). Or, you can snap a chalk line and cut with shears along that. Or you could use the edge of a straight table as a guide and trim with shears. However the easiest way for you to measure and mark a straight line. Most rulers are too short. You can tape two rulers together, use a T square, a yardstick, etc.

PM me if you need more help as I could write 2 or 3 pages on the subject.

For your double blankets how were you doing the edges? Tying?

I sewed them RST and turned them then stitched close the opening. No actual quilting.

Love seeing all your fleece blankets. I've never thought about putting appliques on fleece, but it is a nice touch. We learn so much from each other.
Our driveway (about 1/8 mile) is a sheet of ice. DH walked up the drive just to have something to do. I did laundry and sewed all day yesterday. Plan to sew all day today too. And tomorrow if we still can't get out. Hardest part of my day will be deciding what to cook for dinner.

Ok. That would work and I can see how that might have been difficult to handle. If you have a few small scraps, you might try putting two pieces right side out, insides together, trimming the same size and then just blanket stitch or zig zag around the edges. The nap of the fleece will help it "stick" together and your blanket will lie much more flat and even than if you have to turn it inside out and stitch the edges. As you mentioned, no quilting is needed.

I had all this fleece because originally the plan was to use the fleece for backing on 5 quilts. Just as I had all the fabrics, patterns in mind, etc. I was given the blessing of caring for 3 grandchildren for the school year while Dad was in Afghanistan. So no sewing for a year. By that time the children had grown, favorite colors changed, etc. So that 5 kids are all getting big bed quilts and I used the fleece as blankets.

Lots of times I use fleece for the applique ... but this time I used scraps of cotton fabrics instead.

Summer, my cat, is technically a house kitty. She only goes out on the patio with supervision.

quiltgrammyt2 01-11-2011 07:47 AM

We got snow here yesterday, too, but I had to catch up on house work and laundry after spending the weekend going to some quilt shops and then admiring my new eye candy.
Looks like you was able to make good,FUN use of a snow day.
Beautiful quilt and CUTE fleece blankets. :D

Ooh! Lovely blankets and quilt. I especially noticed the fleece blanket which appears bound. I will have to try that. I have to date just turned a narrow hem on my fleece blankets. Love the look of the binding. Did you bias cut it? Penny

Yes, it was bias cut and left over from another quilt I made a few years ago. If the blanket was square, it would not have needed to have bias cut binding ... but because I curved the corners a bias cut binding worked better.

I just sewed it on, folded over and stitched with a feather stitch to catch all the edges and hide the seam. I have coordinating scraps of Winnie the Pooh fabric to make appliques if I wanted. Still thinking about that.

Just found out I get another snow day tomorrow. I will continue to work on the disappearing 4 patch I started today plus I may start another Christmas Quilt as well as sandwich a quilt. I am really tickled. It's not often that I have days where I don't have to go out. Of course, I could be doing housework but what's the fun in that?

katcincinnati 01-11-2011 09:08 PM

Beautiful work.

annieshane 01-11-2011 09:25 PM

All these are beautiful, but the mint green just caught my eye. You can really make good use of your day. I need to take lessons! The appliques are the perfect answer for the solid flannels.
