I bought this quilt at a Craig's list sale. I just love the fabrics and colors. It screams the Caribbean  The center was torn up by the owners dog  . So I'd love to hear how you would fix this. My husband says I should applique' a large square over the center and do a flap edge. I am thinking a sail boat or something like that. I dunno what I should do for sure. Your thoughts are welcome.
thanks so much for your help. PS I only paid $10.00 for this with 2 standard pillow shams. The quilt is king size :D whole quilt close up of damaged area close up of damaged area ...:( |
I think an applique of a large sale boat would look great.

Hi AK,
Nice to see you again! I would say applique is your most affordable and quickest option. But I would applique something like a birdhouse..with vines and flowers...with birds, bees and butterflies floating around..I would make it a really nice background for the garden scene. |

I should have noted my new bedroom is "beachy" the walls are Seaside Pleasure blue and I hope to use the Caribbean as my palette. Charismah the idea you have would have been perfect for my former bedroom. I had sweetpea flower and morning glories and garland  Now that I have filled you in, what are your thoughts? I also love sea thrtles and whales. LOVE whales!!! OH what to do :? |
Ughhh bad doggie. I am not sure. Maybe cut up the whole quitl and make some cute items out of it?
|
OK well..Then I would make a frame of palm leaves and tropical rainforest type leaves..around the edges...like someone is looking through the rainforest..and then put the sail boat in the middle..so they see the sail boat in the distance...you could also add some beach..water designs in the quilting...it would be fabulous!

You will need some batting under the boat to replace what is missing. |
applique the patch [beachy thme would look good] on top---put some very light batting between it and the quilt [this would hide the unevenness where the tear is] then quilt arround the design to hold it in place

what a find I like the idea of a sailboat and charisma,s idea sounds great
|
How about a coconut tree and tropical flowers :-)

Applique would be beautiful in the center. Something light and airy..... like it is floating.
|
wunderful find ,how about some tropical flowers with raw edges .also i think you could place them like you need to to cover all the damage in the mittle.let me know and see the finished product.thanks for sharing

It's a beautiful quilt...what a shame it was abused! Be sure to show us the finished product. I love the idea of the sail boat and if you can pull off Charisma's idea, it will be a fabulous quilt. Take your time and most of all enjoy it.

i like charismas idea also.....so glad you saved it. it def does have a beach feel...and will be sure to help in the long cold winters up there.
to give depth you could always shadow applique the tropical leaves/flowers or do them in a dark gray or black |
Just can't wait to see what you do with it!

I like the sailboat idea too, with what Charismah said. No need to pull out the hand stitching, just quilt the applique! It will look fabulous!

There are so many great ideas coming through  Good morning by the way ;-) and God bless you! |
Also if you are worried about getting puckers by quilting over the hand quilting to add some water dimension you could always just add a backing..and quilt it on your friend's long arm..that way you can add veins to the leaves...water designs..and define everything a bit more...just roll over the back to form a new binding over the old one...of cut it off right at the binding and re bind it. That would be WAY better than ripping out stitches.

Off to work soon. I hope to see lots more thoughts on fixing this beautiful quilt. Bad bad doggy
|
yes an applique of some sort, even large flowers!
|
Charisma's idea is awesome and I love the quilt. So glad it found a good and loving home!
|
I think big bright flowers like Hibiscus and Bird of Paradise appliques would just pop off of there.

I like the idea of palm trees and a sailboat - maybe you could even put a little dog in the boat to "honor" the culprit who enabled you to get this beautiful quilt! :-D
|
Such great ideas......... hope you will post the end result.
Looking forward to seeing which idea you choose. |

I am not sure how to put that pic on here- but there is the link. Could you do something like that on top of it? Like, just add it right over the existing quilt. I would make the flower large- like say, 4 feet? I am not sure I like the idea of just a sailboat slapped on there. I think it would look more repaired and less like it was meant to be there. If you really want a sailboat, I think Charisma's idea is good. (She is brilliant, btw. Always love her stuff.) |

You can overlap square over the squares or a square with a sail boat pattern.
|
I would find a cheater panel that coincided with the rest of it & cover it up.
|
How about an underwater scene with seaweed and fish? There could be a boat floating on top of the water... ooh, I like the flower idea, too!
|
I have fixed quilts like this for people. You can remove torn pices of the quilt, I am sure you can find material that is close to this material. Then you can cut the pices to replace the torn ones. I also cut batting the same size as the torn pieces hand sew them into the spaces and then applique each piece of replacement pieces into the quilt top. You will have a hard time finding where you have fixed the quilt top.
