I bought this fabric because my mom loves Minis, but I don't know what pattern to use. So my question to you is, what would you do? I wanted to use the twister (I only have the one for 10in squares), but I don't want to cut this fabric up that much. I would like the Mini's to be as intact as possible. Is there a way to frame fabric with the twister pinwheels? Or any other ideas?
Thanks in advance!

My first inclination would be to use this fabric as a center panel. I'd surround it by a black border with white (or maybe yellow) dotted line going down the middle of the black - so it looks like a street. If you want to do the twister pinwheel, that could be the next border. Because those pinwheels "lock" together, you could tailor the width of that border by how many rows of pinwheels you decide to make. If it needs a final border, I might do another street just like the first.

Just an idea . . . .

PS. I think the twister pinwheel is a great idea with this fabric. It would have a similar movement to the Mini fabric.

I would use it for an "attic windows" quilt.

I agree with the attic windows idea. If you have enough left, you could use it as a border.

Prissnboot 03-15-2011 11:46 AM

Where in the world did you get this? My dad has been mini crazy my entire life - he used to have a '62 Morris Mini for years and now has one of the current ones.

Prissnboot- I found this on ebay. It is thicker than normal quilting cotton, so I'm hoping it won't raise any problems for me...
My mom has a 2009 Mini in "Mellow Yellow" and is absolutely obsessed with them. She calls her Mini the "Best car ever."
So when I saw this fabric and just had to buy it.
I really like the idea of attic windows, but I've never done one before.
Thanks for all the great ideas everybody!!!

Exactly what I was thinking! Love the fabric. It's my son's favorite car.

Ohhhh my favorite car toooo. I love thos little cuties! :-D When ever we are in the lower 48 and see one I get a pix by them. Then I wipe the drool off their car

Geeze I got carried away with the mini, now for the quilt...ummm I would not cut it and use it for a center panel. or use this pattern...it is so simple. Can be used with your adorable fabric and a few other cordinating fabrics to frame it.

This is the same quilt as above also in watercolor

super easy watercolor quilt, but can easily be used in "normal" quilt fabric choice. You could put your focal fabric where the green bird fabric is.

I would use the fabric in the centre and so nine patches around it or something.. but keep it intact cute fabric !

EasyPeezy 03-15-2011 01:38 PM

I like Sew Cornie's idea and would make the pinwheels in the border with
solid colors to match the cars. Nice fabric. My mam had a mini years ago. :-)

kiesh 03-15-2011 01:53 PM

I like Sew Cornie's idea, but not for my mom...If I was making it for a nephew or something I would probably do that.
Keep the ideas coming please!

I would fussy cut the car and put it as the center of a star block.

Something like this, perhaps without the white around the center picture.

Yeah, I thought about this after I sent my reply. I'm so used to making kids quilts that that seems to be where my first ideas go. Looks like you're getting lots of good suggestions here. :-D

How large are the Minis? You could put them on fusible and make applique blocks with various scenes in the background.

charmpacksplus 03-15-2011 04:30 PM

How about using it as the backing?

okiepastor 03-15-2011 04:35 PM

I think shadow box would be cute, too--or use each car as a center, and strips with corner blocks around each one.
OR just use it as the center panel and find some neat fabric for multiple borders......

Fabric Galore 03-15-2011 04:36 PM

I like AlaskaSunshine's idea. It would make the mini prints stand out but also make the fabric go further.

Marcie 03-15-2011 04:40 PM

Oh!! I love lil' Coopies!!!

Great idea! Do you by any chance know of a pattern (preferably free)?

I like this idea too! I've never done a star block, are they fairly easy? (I'm 21 and have only made a handful of quilts...)
How am I ever going to choose from all your ideas??

kateyb 03-15-2011 08:38 PM

How about a vertical strippy quilt? The fabric has a perfect dividing line in the design. Then make a strip of a fabric of one or two of the colors of the cars for in between.
