I Can Do This!

Yesterday, I saw a pattern for Flying Geese with just half square triangles. I was not sure if it would look good, so this morning I cut enough for one block. I think I am in love! I've wanted to do Flying Geese for many years, but was too chicken. Now I have found the perfect way.

I am so very happy! :)

Bravo! I like that!

Holy cow. I might be a convert.

And here's another hint--When you are pressing the HST's, press one to the dark and the other to the light. Then, when you go to sew them together, they will nest and you will have a nice crisp point.

ruthrings 04-02-2019 06:56 AM

I prefer this way. The traditional way means you cut off the extra triangle and waste fabric.

osewme 04-02-2019 07:12 AM

Great way to make flying geese. I'll have to try this. And thanks to GingerK for the pressing tip.

Sephie 04-02-2019 07:50 AM

Beautiful colors! Have you tried the No Waste Flying Geese (4 at a time) Method? It's the same idea as making 2 at a time HST where you're just sewing squares on the diagonal, and no wasting of fabric. I recently worked up the courage to try this method and it was glorious.

One block done. I'm very happy with my points.

Thanks to GingerK for the pressing advice! Sephie I had not heard of that procedure, but might give it try some time.

QuiltE you made me laugh on that. Good thing I was not drinking some iced tea. :)

Thanks Toogie.....and everyone. I'm really putting some rich deep colors in this. Already thinking of names.

betthequilter 04-02-2019 04:55 PM

Many ways of making flying geese. I like paper piecing. I make my own pattern.

Go Boston1954! I, too, have wanted to do flying geese and though I know about the half-square triangle method, I have not tried it yet. You have become an inspiration...your fabrics are lovely.

jmoore 04-03-2019 03:47 AM

Nicely done Boston...love your colorful fabrics. We will anxiously await your progress and more photos.

looks great ... no wonder you are happy. I am anxious to see the finished quilt. Which I know will be soon, since you are a Speed Demon when it comes to pumping out quilts:)

MaggieLou 04-03-2019 05:37 AM

Great idea. I'll have to try it. Thanks for posting.

solstice3 04-03-2019 06:43 AM

Great technique. Thanks for sharing

Sallybear6 04-03-2019 07:32 AM

Nice work and pretty fabric!

IrishgalfromNJ 04-03-2019 10:09 AM

I always wondered why we had to waste fabric to make flying geese. Now I know I don't have to. Thanks for sharing.

Jordan 04-03-2019 10:33 AM

Those flying geese are sure pretty and your fabrics are beautiful. Glad you tried something new and how exciting for you. I use Eleanor Burns rulers to make flying geese and they turn out perfect every time. I just love Flying geese and so glad you have found a new pattern to make.

wildyard 04-03-2019 01:01 PM

This is how I always do flying geese. I use the 8 at a time HST method unless I need it to be more scrappy.

Mariposa 04-03-2019 01:09 PM

Congrats on your new-found success! :)

BSKTLOFR-QUILTER 04-03-2019 03:48 PM

I did this one time and forgot about the technique. Dah. Thanks for the reminder. It's not how you do something but the outcome that counts. Thanks for the reminder.

hcarpanini 04-03-2019 04:00 PM

My favorite! Batik and flying geese!

ccthomas 04-03-2019 04:29 PM

Nice flying geese.

DDuMouchel 04-04-2019 06:53 AM

That's one of the great things about quilting, there's almost always more than one way to do anything!
