I cant decide on the border. Should I go thin or thick, one or two. I think a pieced border would be too busy. Please Help!! I have been sitting on this for months.

mary quite contrary 11-19-2008 01:50 PM

Thin of the dark and wide of the light brown.

Nice quilt. Great job.

kathyd 11-19-2008 01:54 PM

Okay, here is my reasoning for figuring out borders. I use one of the dimensions in the quilt squares for the width of borders. For this one I would put a narrow border (the size of the squares in the four-patch corners) in the same dark as the star points and a wider border (the size of the four-patch) in the brown of the four-patches. How do you like that?

cherry 11-19-2008 01:54 PM

Thank you!! I wasnt sure if I should use them both.

Jim's Gem 11-19-2008 02:01 PM

I agree with Kathy!

Beautiful quilt!

quiltsRfun 11-19-2008 03:07 PM

I agree with the others--thin of the dark and a wider of the light.

auntluc 11-19-2008 03:16 PM

You could even go with 3 borders starting first with a thin dark brown to frame it then add wider borders of the other 2 prints.
It really depends on what size you want the finished quilt to be.

marianne 11-19-2008 03:17 PM

I agree with KathyD. Your wider could be the color used in the center of the stars. Lovely quilt.

barnbum 11-19-2008 03:24 PM

Oh my that's gorgeous!!

I haven't read the replies, but I'd definitely do a first border in the dark brown. If you want one border--I'd make it about 3-5", but if you want 2 borders, go narrower, like 2" with the brown, then add a wider tan one.
That's my 2 cents.

You have a very lovely quilt top. All the suggestions sound good. I know I'm of no help. Layout the fabric you have for boarders next to your quilt. Let them talk to you. Play with them. They will speak. :D

Quilt4u 11-19-2008 04:17 PM

Your quilt is beautiful. I would do a thin bodder of dark brown then a larger of the lihgt brown.

DA Mayer 11-19-2008 04:30 PM

I think you have the same answer over and over and I agree totally, what a stunning quilt.

Boston1954 11-19-2008 05:20 PM

I would go with two borders. The inner one slightly more narrow than the outer one. A nice beige and maybe chocolate.

CissyQuilts 11-19-2008 06:29 PM

It's beautiful! I agree with Kathy, thin border with the dark color and thick border with the other. Please post photos when you are done. :D

reneebobby 11-20-2008 03:59 AM

Yeap that is my thought too wow great minds do think alike.

babeegirl 11-20-2008 04:37 AM

cherry, I'm thinking a thin dark border followed by a wider one in the cream of your center blocks then some vine applique. Check out your local library to see if there are quilting books about borders available. This quilt seems to want something special as a finishing touch.

vicki reno 11-20-2008 04:59 AM

Lovely quilt! You could even do two borders of the dark and a light in the middle with your quilting in the light border to accent your stars. I did that on a Dresden plate that i made years ago and that gave it a nice touch. Just another idea. but either way its still beautiful.

sandpat 11-20-2008 05:26 AM

Wow, great quilt! It deserves a special finish....I'm in agreement with all the others. Definetly the narrow dark next to the quilt, then a wider of the light brown or creme. Can't wait to see it finished!

Barbm 11-20-2008 05:58 AM

witout looking at the other's comments- I agreed the same- small darker border, then wider lighter border.

gosh, we all think alike.

Marcia 11-20-2008 06:39 AM

Beautiflul quilt--and I believe you got a consensus from the board of how to border it. If you ever need an opinion--this is the place to go!!

Welcome and please introduce yourself so we can get to know you better.

Beautiful quilt top!!!

Knot Sew 11-20-2008 12:29 PM

lovely quilt top :D

Chele 11-20-2008 01:10 PM

It's going to be lovely no matter how you finish it! What a show stopper!

Kara 11-20-2008 01:15 PM

I'm agreeing with the answers here:

Thin dark followed by wide tan. But I would probably also add another dark on the outside. I like my borders total width to be the width of the block. I think it looks more balanced (but that's just me).

That is one beautiful quilt top!

Janstar 11-20-2008 02:08 PM

I agree with the masses! Beautiful quilt and welcome to the board from Washington.

julieah 11-20-2008 04:25 PM

Very Nice!

I'm a beginner and new around here so I'll just say I think the advice here is right on! How cool to get to ask other quilters.

Great Work! :D

Carol W 11-22-2008 04:57 AM

What a beautiful quilt!!!

I agree with everyone. The dark color for a smaller border next to the quilt top. Then whatever lighter fabric for a wider border next to that.

sewnsewer2 11-22-2008 02:12 PM

That sure is pretty!! I would go with a 4 or 5 inch dark brown border and the binding in the lighter brown.

Elizabeth A. 11-22-2008 03:03 PM

Oh yes, thin to "finish off" the blocks on the edge. Then a nice wide white one, and then if you have enough from the centers of the stars make binding to really make it pop.

butterflywing 11-24-2008 06:01 AM

yes, dark for narrow for contrast, then light for wide for contrast against the dark. if this is a 'using' quilt i would finish with dark to help it stay clean. if a showing quilt, i would finish light.

in either case i LOVE your points. just drop-dead gorgeous!

#1piecemaker 11-24-2008 01:26 PM

Nice job! I like the pattern and colors. I think I would put a border in the lighter shade and bind it with the darker shade. Any way you do it , you should be proud.
