I Ching - Next wall hanging, work in progress
 

At the end I started my small project! It is kind of my design so...I am quite proud :o:o

I am working on my vision of the I Ching...so I like the idea of contrasting colors. I still have to applique the tao to the main part and to applique small string of the same black on each segment following the I Ching model (http://www.professionalfengshui.com/...09/i-ching.gif )

I know it looks all crooked but I still have to trim it and press. I will do it after the apliques

What do you think?
I tried for the first time curve cut and applique ( at the moment I only appliqued the 2 circles in the tao, but I will applique the Tao itself so...at least I made exercise...)

I am still a beginner...so I like to try new things. Now I have to finish the top and I have to decide if the background will be white or black...but I want to wait to see after all the applique if it is too dark or not.

Be merciful because I am a very beginner...but I am bold to try new things :D

You are doing very well. I love Tao and someday hope to incorporate it into one of my quilts.
Please show us your quilt when it is finished.

Interesting....being totally ignorant of oriental (-altho, I love) symbolism/design...is there a specific significance to this particular design...Tao? Everyday we must learn something new.....

The I Ching is a very ancient "divination" method. Actually to me is more like a philosophy. It is called The Book of changes. I have to say that Oriental culture is really focused on this topic. Nothing stays the same...even temples usually are rebuild and change very often ( of course it doesn't count the very ancient and historical ones).
The Tao actually has a slight different meaning: It symbolize Ying and Yang ( a dualism that can refer both in energy kind like female and male energy or good and evil and so on) . Basically it means that there is a balance between the opposite ( there is a little bit of one in the bigger part of the other)

Here is the way that I make applique circles. You don't need the mylar templates shown, I just use thin cardboard carefully cut to the correct size.

Remember, every single one of us was a beginner at one point in our life. You have to learn from your mistakes to improve your quilting skills. You might look into paper piecing to get your seams to match perfectly. Keep up the good work.
