I finally did it!

I have been quilting for nearly 30 years now and until today have never been able to master the Drunkard's Path block. Well today I did it. As I finished each perfect section I was astounded since every other attempt ended with puckers or shorted ends and never square. I decided to take the plunge and I purchased the Accuquilt drunkard's path die. I went all out and got the 14" making each completed curve 7". I was finally able to do this perfectly. Now they may not look perfect in the picture but they are! I am so excited. Even with my poor vision I was able to do this. I just had to share my excitement.

congratulations !!! it is always great to finally climb to the top of the mountain.

Many years ago a teacher taught me curves by saying your waist is smaller than your hips. Put the smaller piece on top -- just your body

sharonve 04-23-2020 08:42 AM

Great job. Isn't it fun to have them turn out perfect! sharonve

Julia, your block is marvelous & love your colors! Way to go!

Tartan 04-23-2020 10:58 AM

Well done! There are lots of different arrangements of Drunkard’s Path blocks.

juliasb 04-23-2020 11:10 AM

I played with how I wanted to arrange the blocks a great deal before I sewed the 2 blocks separately. I wanted to make a meandering road. Who knows not only this quilt top but another one is in the near future.

Congrats to you on your progress and mastering the DP. I think the die system really helps with these traditional blocks that can cause problems. Best wishes on quilt. The colors look pretty!

maryjane 04-23-2020 11:49 AM

Congratulations! My teacher many, many moons ago said to think of it as pie a la mode. The pie shape is on the bottomand you top it a la mode.

GEMRM 04-23-2020 12:24 PM

Congratulations! I recently did a few DP blocks as well, and I did use the Accuquilt die to cut them - our library has one you can go in and use.
I also have a "Curvemaster" foot for sewing them and it really was helpful.
Isn't it great to get something from your wish list tackled?

Hooligan 04-23-2020 01:12 PM

Good for you, congratulations. Doesn't it feel good when you accomplish a new skill.

Battle Axe 04-24-2020 01:30 AM

Congrats on the accomplishment. When I did the hunters star pattern, the saving grace was the accuquilt die. Therefore, my problems stemmed from cutting.

copycat 04-24-2020 02:11 AM

Amazing job! I bet you did the happy dance! Will you make a quilt with your awesome blocks?

jmoore 04-24-2020 03:13 AM

Great job Julia...I’m sure it is a wonderful feeling of accomplishment. I can’t wait to see pictures of your finish.

ka9sdn 04-24-2020 04:07 AM

I had to take apart each of the blocks as I had one piece in each one that was going the wrong way. Now they are right and I have completed 2 more. Laying the 4 of them on the floor gives me a good idea of how this will work out.
I never thought about checking with the Library. Great Idea and as soon as the COVID crisis is over and our library re-opens I will be checking that out. I hope they have one??? In the short time I have had the Accuquilt my dies have grown in numbers quickly. Faster than I can use them actually. This has been a great investment for my quilting. I love it. Here's where I am right now with it. I figure this is one that needs to go nice and slow so I don't mess up the curves.

BonnieJP 04-24-2020 01:18 PM

Congratulations. Isn't it a great feeling to master something you've wanted to for so long?

Our two local guilds partnered with the local library on purchase of an Accuquilt Go and several dies. Anyone can go to the main branch and use the products on a first come first served basis. This is the first time I've actually used it for something other than to demo for others how it works.

Those accuquilt dies are great aren't they. I find my piecing much more accurate with them than when I cut with
a rotary cutter.

Beautiful block, I may have to give that one a try.

MicheleC 05-02-2020 09:39 AM

Congratulations! Your blocks are lovely.

sewingsuz 05-02-2020 11:25 AM

Well done and your blocks are striking!

stillvnu 05-02-2020 05:16 PM

I just want to give you a pat on the back for not giving up! You blocks look great … it doesn't matter the method it is all about the end result … your quilt will be awesome!

leaha 05-02-2020 05:43 PM

great job!

SusieQOH 05-03-2020 04:43 PM

Julia, that looks wonderful! So glad you found a way that works for you. Those dies are great, aren't they?

rryder 05-06-2020 07:44 AM

That's fantastic! Congratulations on finding a solution that works.

This has bothered me for years! I dragged through finishing it and just hated how it looked. I ended up giving this quilt to a dog rescue and they cut it up for coats for the dogs to go to their forever homes. At least it got good use from it.

juliasb 05-07-2020 08:16 AM

I now have 17 blocks done. I am going nice and slow so I don't make a mistake. They are continuing to come out perfect. I had to do a bit of 'scrap' cutting. When I discovered I didn't have enough for 16 blocks. I went back into the scraps I had from the first die cutting and discovered not only did I have enough pieces for a 16th but for a whole 20! Now there are only the smallest of scraps left. I was so afraid I would have to use a different fabric combination to finish a 16th block that I started searching for that before I checked the left over scraps! I learned a very valuable lesson there. Save time and distress, look first! It will be several more days before I have the top finished.

FabQuilter 05-07-2020 02:51 PM

Congratulations!!! That’s quite an accomplishment -its one of my favorite blocks

Really nice!! I started quilting a year ago and the first one was a sampler Christmas quilt. One of the blocks was the Drunkard's path. I really did not like doing it because it reminded me of setting sleeves! Looking at your pretty blocks makes me want to maybe rethink this.
