I would applique those blocks, and use a colorful backing and binding.

Use this for the back of your quilt and them piece the front where you choose the colors. Don't cut this one until you know what size you need.

Even though it looks very plain now when it is quilted it will come to life. Quilting makes the quilt!!!

You could think about making something you really like for the other side and having the blue as the back, although it could be reversible and used as the front also.

It is an "Amish" quilt top. It has value. Look up other Amish quilts and see how they should be finished. Cutting it up would be like making a "Gee's Bend " quilt into place mats. The value is in the whole and make sure you have a label that tells all.

Barbara, I thought it odd that you called a gift 'plain and ugly.' Then I saw the picture. Clearly they thought enough about you to make you something from their heart(s). So, even though it's not the most beautiful quilt top, it's yours.
I've always been the person gifting quilts. I've never been the recipient of one. Anyways, since it's yours, you can feel free to put whatever you desire on the flip side. I'm a big fan of double sided quilts. If I've made too many blocks, that means that I've got enough for the other side. Make it as bright as you'd like. It would then like life with society and the Amish - the blending of two cultures, married in a quilt! Good luck. I hope to see in the future what you do with the other side of your quilt. This is the colors that the Amish use. I was in Tennessee and visited the Amish village. They do beautiful work but it was very simplistic in nature and the colors were always subdued as this is their tradition. In my opinion, the beauty lies in its simplicity. I would keep it just the way it is and treasure it for the work in it. I like JJean's suggestion. Also a minority vote.
