In April, my wife (Judy) and I, while driving to Cedar Key, Florida for a vacation, decided that we wanted to make I Spy quilts. We have 14 month old twin boy neighbors. So we started looking for material. Judy wanted them to be 36" x 48" with 3" octagional pieces. That means 192 pieces - each. Roaming around, we found the Suwannee Valley Shoppes in Trenton, Florida. What a great quilt shop. They have over 5000 bolts of fabric. While there we mentioned we were beginning I Spy quilts. One of the ladies said that she was making 4 for her grandchildren and that she would send us some of her scraps. A week or so after we got home, a package arrived with lots of useable pieces. Therefore, the pieces in the quilts come from Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. I did the cutting and some of the in the ditch quilting. Judy sewed all the pieces together. What fun.
Attahced are pictures of one of the quilts. I am sending a second message with number 2. I Spy quilt number 1 I Spy quilt number 1 detailed of 192 different pieces. |
First of all let me say welcome to our quilting family. We are really happy to have another male quilter. Second I love your quilts. I don't think that I have sean an I spy that big. You did a great job.

What lucky kids! This is so colorful! How great is it that you were able to meet another quilter doing the same project with extras?

Will (& Shirley too): WOW, what a bunch of work went into those. But what fun those kiddies are going to have playing I SPY!!! Great job.
|
I've never heard of or seen an "I spy" quilt. Both of your's are really cute!
|
The quilts are great. How difficult was it to find all the different fabric?
|
I love them!!! Love the way they are put together.
|
How fun are they??? Great job!!!

Hi, Initially it was easy. Of course, with needing 192 different pieces each for 2 quilts, it became harder. At the end, we were 9 pieces short and had to really scrounge the cloth stores. Wal-Mart only goes so far and most of their stores have the same material of this type. We did find one store that would cut a fat eighth which was nice.

I love them, a lot of hard work,
|
Those are very cute, you must have some very special neighbors :D
|
What a great job. Those boys are going to have a grand time snuggling under them and playing with them. You are really good neighbors.

They are both wonderful. The boys will love them, they'll definately keep them occupied with all the vibrant colours. Nice to be able to look at all the fabrics & relate them to different parts of the country too. Such lucky boys to have neighbours like to you. :D Tisha |
This gives me an idea for a piece of fabric I saw on the remnant table at the fabric store. I just passed it over but it was something with all the states. I may have to go back and take another look at that fabric, even though I scolded myself for the stuff I bought yesterday. This would make a nice quilt for the new granddaughter I'm expecting. (I've only planned three so far - LOL!) Can't beat the price at $1.99/yd and it would give me 50 squares.

Wow! I'm sure they'll have hours of fun with their quilts! Lucky boys!
|
very nice quilt
|
They both turned out wonderful! I'm sure the boys will have lots of fun using them!

I did one for my grandson (before he was born). The first two quilts had been based on my daughter's likes and I asked my SIL what he would like (he was totally confused), but he is Korean and said Yin Yang, he supposed. So I made a straight yin yang surrounded by "I spy" type of fabrics. I'll try to put in a picture... Oh well, some of us are just too elctronically challenged to exist. sigh.........
