I want to make a quilt of this picture... but I have NO idea of how to start.
Does anyone have any tips? A link? A book you'd recommend? This is on the Southern Shore of Newfoundland... also known as the Irish Shore in a little place called Tors Cove. We have sat there looking down at the Cribbeys ( that's the name of this tiny spot) and watched whales breach just beyond the headland. It is heaven on earth for me. And very special for my husband as his greatgrandmother was born in Tors Cove. |
sorry, I can't help you with the quilt, Mamagus. I just wanted to say that is such a beautiful, serene area. Oh, I hope you will do an art quilt.
I can't help you with your question, but what a beautiful area. I can certainly see why you would want to make a quilt of it.
i would trace all the major elements of the picture - the house/windows/door, the road, the mountains, the hills.
then scan that into the computer, enlarge it to the size that you want the quilt to be, then print it out. tape the pages to a light source (i use my sliding glass doors) and trace then pattern onto freeze paper or fusible web. then you cut out the pattern pieces and adhere them to the fabric. that landscape is beautiful and i'm sure the quilt will look great. |
I have a book called Landscape Quilts, by Natalie Sewell, it's got tons of great tips and hints for your project, notes and details about fabric selection and all kinds of stuff. You should take a look at the book, even if you just leaf through it at your local bookstore.
I can't help with the quilt either, but just wanted to say what a beatiful picture. Must be very cool to watch the whales!
Oh Mama...that will really be a beautiful quilt when you are done! Does the cute little house have special meaning to you or your DH? Klue gave you the technique that I used on my portrait quilt of my cat. Thats about as close to "landscape" as I've come.
A few years back Nancy Zieman did a lot of landscape quilts and had shows on them. Check out her website: www.nancysnotions.com
That would be a beautiful quilt. Please lets us know what you find out.

that's so pretty it doesn't even look real
How about if you marked it off into squares and pieced them using the appropriate colors.
Mama
That view looks so peaceful & sureal. It must be like looking at a piece of heaven on earth. Klue never ceases to amaze me with her advice - she's just like a Fairy Godmother always there when you need her. Good luck with your project - can't wait to see it. Tisha |

I have sat on that grassy area too and watched the whales and icebergs. Another of my favorite spots is the lighthouse in the community where I was born----the Ferryland lighthouse ---- I'd like to do that in a quilt. ranger http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3256/...ac8bf1e1_o.jpg |
I saw on sewing with nancy, beautiful photo quilts, you print it on material, al large as you want it by breaking it up into tiles, then sewing it together. The quest added a frame around it. Maybe the directions are on the web site.
Wow, what a beautiful place.
You are so lucky to live there. |

Hi Mamagus - I've got a book that tells you how to turn photos into quilts - I don't need it, PM me your address and I'll send it to you.
What a beautiful place! It certainly would make a beautiful art quilt. I agree with all the suggestions given. I have the Landscape Quilt book, and have been gathering fabrics to make some of favortite spots from childhood and trips, and books, and...... The old bucket list syndrome!
Can't wait to see what you decide to do!  |
Awesome picture!!! I can't wait to see the quilt!!! :D :D :D
Go to her website below and all three half hour shows are there on the quilt tab. Sorry the link probably isn't live.

Sewing with nancy has a book and a video that is about landscaping quilts. It is not hard to add a building to it. The thing I like about the book is it shows you how to use the acrylics to shade things and make them look more real.
I am sure there is many books on this subject out there, maybe if you google it, there will be other options as well. Maybe a tutorial on line??? LOL we must have been posting at the same time??? |

I can't think of a better person to try!!! :D
The picture is beautiful. My hat is off to you. I wouldn't even know where to start.
I was just looking through the latest Fons and Porter and on page 44 is an article about "Art of Quilting." It shows several pieces done by different artists--all boat/water related. Most are from photos. It not a how-to article too much, but does offer some techniques each used.
I can't see a month on the cover anywhere--huh, strange. But it has a big 10 on the side (10 Great Quilts to Stitch this Summer). God luck! Let us know when you decide how you're going to do it. |
Karla...I just got that in the mail yesterday...Its July/August 2009.
Try just copying the picture with the aid of your computer and then quilt in parts of the scenes. You can use regular cotton fabric with a picture coating and it come out wonderful..You can't even see the seams
