Can you hear the whine in that?
I am making this baby quilt - my version of an I Spy. Since I'm not sure what an I Spy really is...this just kind of came together. Grandpa is known as a bow tie guy so that worked well. I plan on adding a small black border to edge the bias pieces and kind of frame it.

Now I am stuck on what to do about the back. The front is so busy.
I have a piece of black that has chalkboard abc's on it (parents are teachers) It is not quite large enough but I could put borders on it. Was not sure about black and white so I bought some flannel that has abc in multicolors with a white background. Then today I came home with a red on red flannel. Kind of a marble. And I am NOT telling DH how much I have spent on fabric for this!!! The baby is here and I'm stuck! Any ideas?

OH MY! I'm still mesmerized by the front!
But, I"m leaning towards the red for the back

barnbum 03-29-2008 05:55 PM

Oh, I'm a teacher and I vote for the ABCs!! It's not like the baby will be looking at the front and back at the same time. :D

That is a wonderful quilt!! Lucky baby!!

Hi ,
Use the alphabet fabric and add some of the red to make it bigger. Great looking quilt for a baby!!!

Here is an I Spy quilt that I made for a granddaughter.

Skacian-that is what I have seen. I didn't think I could do hexagons so I made fake ones. I just used random picture fabric. I didn't tie it into a theme (other than boy) or try to do one for each letter of the alphabet. Is that what is usually done?

annmarie 03-29-2008 07:04 PM

2 Doods - that is an awesome quilt.   Lots of work went into that one. Looks like the ABC's get my vote too.

bebe-what is a good size? As it is now it is 36x45. I still need to add the border. I am leaning toward the flannel for the back. Just for cuddle factor.

You did just fine with your random selection of picture fabric. That is exactly the same thing I did with mine. I think the other ladies on this site can be more helpful with your choice of backing fabric. All of the quilts I have done I have used muslin backing, and hand-quilted. I am thinking of trying some other types of backing, so I will be interested in the opinions of others.

Love your quilt, I vote for the abc's too.

You did a great job on the quilt. I think that I also vote for the ABC's for the back.

That is the neatest "I Spy" quilt I've ever seen. Your workmanship is exquisite. I vote chalkboard ABC's for the backing. I love how you used the black and white on the front.

sandpat 03-30-2008 05:12 AM

What a great quilt! Lucky grandchild. I vote for the ABC's also. Use the red for the binding.

newquiltertoni 03-30-2008 05:27 AM

I want to do one of these some day! I agree with sandpat! Can't wait to see it finished.

I vote for ABC's. Then everyone important in his life is represented ...granny made the quilt, Bowtie grandpa, and teacher parents. I love your design! I think the size will be perfect once you get the border on and with ABC's on the back, it'll be reversible! My grandson is 2 1/2 and he loves his I Spy. I hear him in the mornings talking to his quilt when he wakes up...hello puppy, hello butterfly...even if it's still dark :)

hannahsmom 03-30-2008 07:29 AM

I say the ABC's.. it can be an all around "learning" quilt from all the different pics to the ABC's. It is look'n good, let us see it when it is all done!

Jaynie 03-30-2008 09:35 PM

Excellent "I spy". I made one for my grandson a few years ago, but it was no where near this striking. I LOVE the black & white. I too am thinking the ABC's would be nice for the backing. Lucky little boy that will recieve this quilt!!!!

Moonpi 03-30-2008 09:55 PM

I'd go for the comfy red flannel and the black and white chalkboard as wide border, maybe even wrapping it around to the front. It's great!

skacian 03-31-2008 05:44 AM

I really don't care for a choice of black and white in a baby quilt....way too harsh....

I don't usually either but....besides needing to seperate the pictures with something neutral....
I think his parents will like it! They teach music and his mother is an accomplished pianist. That is why I think it is OK. I found some piano keys print but it had a flaw in it and there wasn't enough otherwise. Have not seen that fabric anywhere else since. I am leaning toward the flannel backing.

Wow, 2 Doods---that looks wonderful. I would go with the red on red on the back---something simple since there are so many wonderful things on the front.
p.s.----I did the same thing and have bought 3 different fabrics for a quilt I'm working on for the back---like you, just couldn't decide

skacian 03-31-2008 08:08 AM

That makes sense to go with the black and white, since the parents are into piano.....would definitely go with flannel backing...and red would be appropriate....
