"Inherited" quilt top--one step closer to completion

2 Attachment(s)
After many hours on the design wall, I finally came up with a back that I liked that didn't overwhelm the front. I wanted to make hearts from the left over squares and originally planned to use 4, but felt that it was too much...so I cut it down to 2 with the label in the middle and placed it all as a strip on the right side. I then made symmetrical strips following the layout of the front to "border" the label strip and used the border fabric to fill out the left side of the backing. I'll bind it with the border fabric.
Now to decide on the quilting...an all-over pattern? thread color? With a pieced back and front that don't share seam lines for the most part, is an all-over pattern the best bet? Opinions are appreciated. Thanks.

PS. More about this quilt, including pictures of the completed top and label can be seen on an earlier post at http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...e-t261330.html

Very nice indeed

Love the fabrics

I would quilt to fit the pattern on the front. Since the back only has a few blocks, I don't think it will matter. I'd love to see the quilt when you finish it! Good job!

What a wonderful story and quilt! You son chose beautiful fabrics--blue is my favorite color, and you've done a magnificent job of completing it for him and his daughter. The label is so special too. My thoughts and prayers are with him and all of your family as he goes forward to serve us all. Many blessings!

I would like to say a big "THANK YOU" to your son for his service. GOD be with him. You have done a beautiful job of finishing this quilt and the label is outstanding. This quilt will be in the family for years to come as a treasured piece of his and your past. Thank you for sharing this beautiful quilt and the story. Hugs to all. BrendaK

Pollytink & BrendaK...thank you for your thoughts & prayers for my son as he serves in the USAF. I am very proud of him for so many things. He is a good and honorable man who loves God, family and country. He also has a good eye for color as evidenced by the fabrics he chose. Thanks for your compliments, he is graduating from boot camp in early April and I will present him and his daughter the finished quilt then. A friend is going to machine quilt it for me...I just need to pick out thread and pattern...more fun!
Thanks to everyone for the input and feedback, it's very much appreciated.

I think the back of this quilt really compliments the front done by your son. Great job.

Koriana: What a labor of love. Your son (and his daughter) will be thrilled to have a quilt that is a compilation of his and your visions. Tell your son congratulations on his graduation and thank him for his service to our country. The quilt will be a reminder and reassuring hug of her dad (and you) while he is away.

Appears you doing a great job. It looks easier than it is. I seem to always ended up with the orphan blocks in my quilting group.

Love the back. I would do a all-over quilting pattern using a verigated blue/green thread. Both sides are so pretty that the quilting doesn't need to be showcased.

Kooklabell 03-18-2015 02:46 PM

Oh my, I just went back and looked at where you both started and now the completed top and back. This is an incredible quilt and treasure.

Thanks for the suggestion...Put it on a friend's long arm last night...quilted lines of fish going opposite directions in a variegated blue-green-brown Madiera thread...took about 4-1/2 hours..we had a few miss-starts, but w learned and laughed a lot. I'll post a picture when I get it bound.
