Introduction & Crash Course

3 Attachment(s)
Hi, I'm Ann. I found a Singer 15-91 on the side of the road in June and was given a Shark Sewing Machine in Mayish. I've been working on the FandominStitches.com Harry Potter Project of Doom Paper Piercing (or Quilt by Number as I call it) quilt slowly since then.

The Singer 15-91 was in rough shape so I took it in to get repaired since the wires were fraying and I don't know a think about repairing it. While it was in the shop, I started working on the cabinet. The Cabinet had Mold and needed to be repaired.

I got the bright idea on Thanksgiving that I would quilt my niece and nephew quilts for Christmas. So Within the course of Friday, Saturday and Sunday, I took a crash course in quilting based on youtube and pinterest finds. Sunday Night, I hit the wall of everything I could do for the quilt with 1 line left in the quilting process, and just the satin bias tape to add around the edges.

I've also learned that my cats are not fat enough to act as weights when they sit on the corners as I'm trying to straightening levels. So I'm learning a new skill in time to drive myself crazy before the holiday season. Sounds like a great idea.

It looks great.

Super cute. Not sure why you need to use satin bias tape. That will be very slippery & usually is reserved for blankets. I'm sure it will feel nice & smooth, but if it causes you too much aggravation, you could always make a basic cotton fabric binding that would be a lot easier to work with. I will say that for the satin bias tape, you probably want to get clips (either the metal ones or Wonder Clips) as the pins will often leave a permanent mark/mar in the satin fabric.

Your nieces & nephews will be very lucky come Christmas Day!

You GO Girl--------I like the way you do business. Very nice cabinet and sewing machine and quilt. Keep it up and welcome to the board.

You did a beautiful job on the cabinet and also the quilt.

Thank you all.

I finished the quilt tonight. I ended up using basic white bias tape because the blue satin just over powered it. When I'm not on my phone tomorrow I'll post a picture of it,

I'm so surprised at the difference in the singer and shark. One sounds loud and tired and the other is just wondering along.

I think you're amazing. "Look what I found, a sewing matching. I'll clean it and repair it and just teach myself to sew!" What a lucky niece and nephew! It looks like you're quilting too! What a great example to us all! I can't wait to see what you make. :D

Great find. Hope the sewing machine turns out well. They are great to sew on. Love the quilt.

You are off to a great start! Welcome to the world of quilting.

carolynjo 12-01-2015 07:13 AM

Lucky you! Enjoy your machines.

ManiacQuilter2 12-01-2015 07:13 AM

It looks great for a first quilt. We all improve with the more we make. Check out the section called "For Vintage & Antique Machine Enthusiasts". There are a lot of real smart members that know all about restoring older DSM.

tessagin 12-01-2015 07:25 AM

Everything was meant to be anxious to see finished. So fortunate all around. For me it would be my Christmas gift done.

It's amazing what people will throw away. I'm glad you rescued the machine and cabinet.

Kathy T. 12-01-2015 09:59 AM

Cats are excellent supervisors and inspectors - also good as paperweights on paper, but not so on fabric! Very cute quilt and nice job of quilting with all that "help" - lol.

mjhaess 12-01-2015 12:27 PM

Great machine...

Karen Mc 12-01-2015 03:19 PM

If you are in for "crash courses" in piecing and/or quilting, go to Youtube and get some tutorials. There are many and they are usually very informative. Good luck, and welcome to the club

2manyhobbies 12-02-2015 04:36 AM

What a spectacular save!

annette1952 12-02-2015 07:33 AM

Your first quilt is amazing. Great work! Also your machine looks very nice. Can't believe someone would just throw it away but some see it as junk. We see it as a jewel. Can't wait to see your next quilt. I am also self taught & now days with the internet it is so much easier to get info. I used to get my info at the library. I was always checking books out on quilting. There are a ton of great you tube videos to help you with anything you want to know about quilting. Also if you ever have questions you can count on the board members here. They are always willing to help. They are a great bunch of people.

What a great quilt!!!! You should be very proud. It is adorable.
