Iowa rest stop quilt blocks

1 Attachment(s)
What a delightful surprise to find these 'barn quilts' on the outside and the quilt blocks in the floor of the inside of the rest stop. They are in/on the rest stop on I80 on the east side of the state. The drunkards path tile in the floor was not very recognizable.

What a great idea!! Beautify the country!

SusieQOH 08-20-2017 08:12 AM

That's awesome! Thanks for posting.
I love traditional blocks most of all.

Boston1954 08-20-2017 09:06 AM

Wonderful. I wish I could get points like that. :)

RedGarnet222 08-20-2017 09:09 AM

I would have been like you spending the time to take pictures. I wonder how this decoration of the rest stop got started. I bet the story is as good as the results.

NIICHMOM 08-20-2017 10:58 AM

I''m from Northeastern Iowa and travel I do Travel I80. But have never stopped at the rest areas... But you can bet I will the next time I go on I80...

That is fantastic. Maybe quilting is coming back to everyone if they are displayed on the wall and floor of a rest stop! Thanks for sharing.

LindaMRB 08-20-2017 05:21 PM

Drunkard's Path not recognizable? Well of course! These are great - and it's nice they labeled them for folks who don't know.

mucky 08-20-2017 06:17 PM

How interesting.

quiltingshorttimer 08-20-2017 07:36 PM

bet that was near the Kalona, IA exit--Don (ISew) would know. Very cool--wish I had those tiles in my bathroom!

jmoore 08-21-2017 02:39 AM

Yes, that would have not been a place I would expect to see those. : )

BETTY62 08-21-2017 02:44 AM

How unique. Love it.

Are you on vacation? Or maybe attending Deb Tucker's Certified Instructor training in Des Moines?

Maureen 08-21-2017 03:40 AM

I have also seen these quilt squares at the rest stop while going to visit my brother in DesMoines. I must say, I have never seen so many quilt shops as they have in DesMoines and the whole state for that matter. I was there during the Quilt week celebration so I went to a great quilt show downtown. I also went to Missouri Star, which was a treasure and not far from Des Moines. We went to the Amana Colonies, another amazing community where quilting was a necessity. I think my sister in law caught the quilting bug. She sewed for many years but never nade a quilt. now she has!!!!

I got back a week ago from a driving trip to see family in MN and visit Nancy's Notions in WI and see some quilt and fabric shops. I trained as a math teacher in college, but don't think I could be a quilting instructor. Besides, there is a certified Deb Tucker instructor in a town about a 1/2 hour from here.

I just love the blocks and want one for my barn. DH doesn't see the point, but the point is simple: we all want to be surrounded by quilt art!

rural01 08-21-2017 07:12 AM

That is fabulous!

lindaschipper 08-21-2017 07:24 AM

Oh my gosh....I live in Davenport, Iowa and have never had the opportunity to stop at this particular rest stop. How could I have missed it?? Guess a special trip is in order...LOL ! Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Jules51 08-21-2017 02:43 PM

Thanks for posting those great blocks! Most of all, a great big Thank You to those who painted the blocks, they are truly a work of art!

retiredteacher09 08-21-2017 03:27 PM

I have been to that rest stop! :) I was amazed at the tiles.

I'm sure it was near Kalona. You are in real 'quilt country' when you are in that area.

Gail B 08-21-2017 09:18 PM

What a unique idea for a rest stop. Love them - thanks for posting.

Lilrain 08-22-2017 11:16 PM

Quilting is big here.
Wish we had something like that

laurilli 08-23-2017 07:58 AM

Just came S. Carolina, went through N. Carolina, at one of their welcome center rest stops (don't know which-wasn't driving, I watch scenery) they had some beautiful quilt block tiles hanging inside.

Maralyn 09-22-2017 01:27 PM

Wow. I have traveled I80 in that part of the state many times and we have never stopped at that rest area as we try to make it to Galesburg, IL when we are eastbound and stop at Walcott when we are westbound. Might need to make an extra stop next time.

givio 09-22-2017 06:08 PM

lol You wish you could get points like that! lolol That's funny.
Besides Drunkard's Path, Jacob's ladder was a little strange. And a circle in the middle of Bear's Paw! :-)
I agree, the story behind choosing those decorations might be an interesting one.

oksewglad 09-22-2017 07:29 PM

LOL I guess we Iowans don't need to stop at the rest stop as we head out of state. I've never stopped there either.

givio, I think some of the distortion you see is the camera flash off the tiled floor.
