Hi Everyone,
I recently ordered Anita Grossman Solomon's book "Rotary Cutting Revolution" after reading about it and her quilts in a previous issue of Quiltmaker magazine. I'm having SO much fun with her "No Waste Windmill" pattern! Cutting out 56 blocks 8 at a time was a breeze; only two cuts per stack! It took me longer to settle on a pattern for all these Windmill blocks, lol. Piecing is a breeze, too. No hassle, practically no pinning, just have to watch my patch orientation. It's going pretty quickly, too. I have two rows completely done and working on a third. I'm also very pleased with these batiks from connectingthreads.com. They washed up super nice and are a joy to work with. Again, no hassles there, either. Wow. How fun to finally work on a project with no headaches! This quilt is going to be for our 8th grandchild. When our DIL was talking about how active this little guy is in her tummy, I got the inspiration for this windmill pattern. Thanks, Anita! "Life's a Breeze" for upcoming grandson |

Great job! and great colors.

Thanks, everyone. I'm having so much fun with this. To think I originally bought the fabs for a "Margo Bag", lol. Oh well, babies take precedence over bags, right?
|
Anita Soloman Grossman is a terrific woman, she has the best ideas for time saving when quilting. Your quilt is so lovely, I may have to buy her book-great colors...much better than a bag!
|
I've got this book too. It's loads of fun, my favorite is the arrowhead block,(I think that's what it was called) It was the one featured in the magazine.

Oh so pretty!
I am working on the same pattern with mostly novelty prints, I spy style, for my grand daughter Juliet (3 months old). I am strugling with sewing them together. I must be doing something wrong because other people have mentioned how easy it was. I also made the no waste square in a square pattern she has in that book. That one whipped up real easy for me. Did you use the paper to cut through or did you mark a cutting board and cut it that way? I tried the paper on top of the fabric for the no waste pin wheel and it kept moving on me so my cut was way off. I did much better laying it on the cutting board that is marked and then cutting it. |

Now, I'll bet this will look adorable in eye spy prints. What a cute idea! What a very lucky granddaughter you have. I used the paper template, but I used a glue stick to glue the outer edges of the template to the edges of the fabric on top of the stack. The glue stick held the template to the fabric just fine, and since it was glued to the outer edges of the fabric, no glue got on any of the pieces that were to be sewn. Did you try the glue stick trick? I will try the other method next time and see which way I prefer. Nice to hear that you had success with the Square in a Square project. That will definitely be my next project from Anita's book. I just LOVE her methods, so quick and easy. On this one though, I am having to be very careful of the orientation of my patches, lest I should sew a purple windmill blade to a green windmill!  |
Beautiful. Great colors.
|
I have that book also and can't wait to try it. Please post a pic when it's finished. So cool

I am jus tglad it worked with marking the mat because this patterna dn the sq in a sq are just too much fun. I like both but it is easier to work the square in a square because you do not hav eto worry to much about lay out. I'll post mine too when I get it done along with the square in a square that I made for a yet unborn grand baby. "Life's a Breeze" Kayrn The "No Waste Windmill" pattern can be found in Anita Grossman Soloman's book "Rotary Cutting Revolution" published last year by C & T Publishing. It's available through amazon.com, and most other quilt shops. Here it is at amazon.com for only $17.53: http://www.amazon.com/Rotary-Cutting...0285115&sr=8-1 |
Here is a HGTV clip that shows Anita Grossman Solomon doing the square in a square using the rotary mat cutting technique. There is also another one that shows the Italian block. It is the quilt on the cover of her book Rotary Cutting Revolution. You have to be patient and wait throught the advertising.

I ordered this book too. I didn't like all the waste from the other rulers I bought for the windmill. when i saw she had a way to make it without waste that was for me. Great quilt love your colors.

thats so cool, i'll have to try that.

Hi Anna,
Nicely done, both of them!!! They're both so cute and colorful, too! Isn't it nice that these sew up as quickly as they do? I'm so glad you shared them here and hope you are also posting them in your own post. :D |
