Jelly Roll Race Finished!

3 Attachment(s)
I finally finished this today after having it in progress for several years now. It is one of my first quilts and it was put away for a long time because my teacher moved. I pulled it out a few weeks ago and decided it would be my first quilt to finish with free motion quilting. I'm extremely pleased with the results. I struggled getting the quilting done because I quilted the first 1/3 of it just fine and then I started having thread break after thread break. I cleaned, re-threaded a hundred times, bought new needles, tried silicone spray on the top and thread. I finally bought Aurifil thread in a matching color. It took the combination of the spray, thread and needles to make it work. The batiks on this quilt were woven so tightly it was giving me fits. I can't tell you how very thrilled I am that it is finished and I am so happy to share it.

Congrats on a great finish with your quilt. It is amazing what we learn from our first quilt. Glad you could get the problems solved.

What size/type needle finally worked? I've heard mention of a Top-stitch 90/14 needle.

It ended up being a 90/14 Microtex needle. I tried a topstitch needle but it didn’t do the trick for me.

The border is lovely and really showcases the “race”.

That is fantastic. Love the batiks and your FMQing is great for your first attempt on a whole quilt given your troubles. Great job. It must feel great to have accomplished this.

Very impressed with your FMQ. I just haven’t got the hang of it yet. Thanks for sharing.

ArtsyOne 03-25-2019 04:23 AM

What wonderful spacing you got on your FMQ - doesn't look at all like my first effort!

RedGarnet222 03-25-2019 07:41 AM

Yippee! It is so pretty all finished up and ready to use. Great job on your first quilting. I am sorry it was such a hard job to finish for you, but, you did it!

MicheleC 03-25-2019 07:54 AM

Thank you all for the compliments on the FMQ. I did a lot of practicing on scrap sandwiches that did Not look nearly as nice before I finally found the rhythm. I also watched a lot of Angela Walters videos before biting the proverbial bullet. She says many times that nobody ever became a better quilter by ripping out stitches and a finished quilt is better than a perfect quilt top.
