Jelly Roll Race technique meets the one seam flying geese

1 Attachment(s)
MSQC uploaded a video for the JRR v3.0 recently, and whilst watching Jenny putting the 'triangles' onto the Jelly Roll strips I had one of those lightbulb moments and thought I wonder if it would work to combine both the techniques mentioned in the title....and this is what I came up with....currently only in a small scale, but soon to be done in an actual quilt top size (for Aussie Hero Quilts, which is similar to Quilts of Valor)

So far as I know, I've not seen one done this way before and I think it will make for an interesting finished quilt don't you?

Thanks for looking
Hugs
Naomi

What a great twist! Are you going to have the geese all point the same way? Are you going to cut out the bulk in the back or leave it?

ArtsyOne 08-30-2014 05:42 AM

What a good idea!

willferg 08-30-2014 05:42 AM

I can't find that video anywhere...is it limited to subscribers or something?

gabeway 08-30-2014 05:45 AM

Should be a great look.

Cindy60545 08-31-2014 02:12 AM

fantastic idea! can't wait to see the end result.

Geri B 08-31-2014 03:00 AM

Is that like a 5 minute block type idea? Show how, I like it? Jenny's tute with those triangles looked a little tricky if you were not really concentrating.....

msmariab5 08-31-2014 05:26 AM

Love it! Great idea!

I'm not sure if this one is on YouTube yet or not but you can probably get to it going this route. I'm not as good as most of our great site finders on this board, but this should work. Go to Missouriquiltco.com/shop/dailydeal this will open the page for the daily deal purchase (you don't have to purchase), but at the top of the page there is a toolbar with tutorials on it, click there and she has lots of tutorials I don't know what number this particular tutorial is, you will have to search- most likely near the end of the tutes. You can also request to be put on their email list, and you will get a new tutorial almost every week. Hope you can follow these poor directions.

Here is the link for the tute: http://land.missouriquiltco.com/jelly-roll-race-3/. Sign up for their newsletter. That is how you'll get linked to their latest tutes.

Please take pictures as you do your version so you can see how you did it. Thought the same about Jenny's, it could be so easy to get them sewn in wrong. Love the 5 minute blocks.

Great idea !!!

Sadly I'm not clever enough to work out how to get them all the face the same way in a JRR quilt...if I was just joining strips and cutting them the required width and sewing them together, then I would, but I'd have no hair left trying to work out how to get them rotated all one way on a full quilt haha

I hadn't really put much thought to the bulk, I guess I'll leave it in on the first one and if it doesn't sit flat enough, I'll take it out next time.

I have a Jelly Roll picked out ready to try the whole quilt top...so will post a pic of it when it's done.

You're welcome, it's my pleasure to finally be able to share something!

twinkie 09-01-2014 03:03 AM

A unique way of doing it. Wouldn't think of doing a 5 min block

mjhaess 09-01-2014 08:18 AM

Looks interesting..

Suzanne57 09-01-2014 12:51 PM

I just watched the tutorial from MSQC and her "second set of arms" was hilarious! Some times I wish I had them too.

Geri B 09-02-2014 03:05 AM

I personally would do this jelly roll by cutting white, or whatever solid color, into quarter triangles......cut square whatever to get 4 - 2 1/2" QST triangles, I think 4", but have to check formula... then double diagonal, getting 4 out of square. Then sew one to one end of each strip, then sew strips together....hmmm, I have an odd jr, may try my own idea........
