Jungle Babies

2 Attachment(s)
My latest projects.... 2 baby quilts for a mission trip made from JAF "Jungle Babies" fabric .

My church is going to have a 'baby shower' for a community in Eastern Kentucky. One is a quilt panel and the other is fabric that I quilted around the animals. I opted to use rick rac on the edges in lieu of binding.... thinking it would save me time...... I was wrong. But oh well.... I like how the rick rac turned out. Not sure if I will do another one using this method. The second picture is the label that I sewed to each quilt.

Thanks for looking.

They are adorable. I am sure some child is going to be so lucky to get one of your quilts. Interesting using Rick Rack as an outside treatment. I adore using rick rack when ever I can in a quilt.

QuiltnNan 05-16-2016 03:38 AM

nicely done

How cute. I have used that panel and material too.

Love the Jungle Babies. Have a really dumb question. Do you tack the points of the rick rack down individually so they won't/don't curl up? Obviously can't when it is used on the outside, but what about the example shown. Haven't used it in a while and that is what I remember it did and had to iron it back into place. Has it changed and how do you handle it???

Hi all: I have had several questions about how I done the rick rac..... here is what I done..... keep in mind... there may be a better way.

A. Basting rick rac to top:
1. I used "jumbo" rick rac - 1/2" wide. (2 packages per quilt)
2. Making sure my top was square, I basted the rick rac to the front of the quilt top by matching the edge of the top to the edge of the rick rac and sewed just under 1/4" seam.
3. Joining rick rac --- I initially tried to "join" them like binding.... but that looked hideous on the backside. So.... when I got down to the last 3-4 inches of rick rac, I simply overlapped the new over the old (matching the curves) letting about an inch of each end extend off the top.
4. Corners --- I attempted to 'miter' the corners like you do binding. It worked ok but made for very thick corners.
5. When you come back to your starting point, join like #3 above.

Making sandwich:
1. Lay out batting as bottom layer. Smooth carefully and thoroughly.
2. Lay backing right side up on top of batting. Smooth carefully and thoroughly.
3. Lay top right side down on top of backing. Smooth carefully and thoroughly.
4. Pin all 3 layers together at edges. I did this very closely together. Mark about 8" area on one side to not sew.... this will be the way you turn the quilt right side out. I marked by putting 2 pins together (parallel) at my 'beginning' and 'ending' point.
5. Trim layers even with top and sew. Don't forget to leave an opening!

Prepare to quilt:
1. Turn quilt sandwich right side out, press around edges very firmly.
2. Half of the rick rac will be showing.
3. Now this is where I noticed that no matter how careful I was with smoothing each layer and with pinning, there was still some "looseness" between the layers.
4. Sew 1/4" seam all the way around the edge.... making sure to close up the "opening" where you turned the quilt.

Quilt as desired. I pinned the sandwich to my LA and quilted.

As I noted above, there may be a better way of doing this. I love the effect of the rick rac edging.... but it was not the easiest method to do.
