While visiting my grandma today, I came across some of her older quilts. She has Alzheimers and now doesn't remember what she did with most of them or the rest of her quilt tops. So, over the next few days, I'll post more pics of them...just as soon as we find them. LOL. A few of the pictures aren't top quality but I think you can still see the quilt. The owl quilt is embroidered but I'm not quite sure with what type of thread. Some of it seems to be yarn and then other seems to be some type of string, it doesn't look like embroidery thread.

They're beautiful :P , there is nothing more special than having something that's been made by a person who is significant in your life. I really hope you find the rest of them.

If Shelly hadn't shown us her grandma's quilts I probably wouldn't have thought of it but now I'm putting together a small album with pictures of the old quilts for posterity. (and insurance)
Heather I love the quilts, make notes of anything she can remember about them for future generations.

Those are beautiful Heather! I've never seen anything like the first one you showed. That's really a neat pattern! And I can hardly believe how much work she must have put into the owl quilt. Gorgeous! You're lucky to have these, for so many reasons. :)

How blessed you are!!! Those are wonderful treasures.

I like the rope-like pattern on the fan quilt from the red edging. The owls are fun, too. Thanks for sharing.

Is she able to give you any background on her beauties, Ex: Year, Who for, Pattern, things like that. Did she sign them. What precious memories and all the thoughts that where going on in her head as she was designing and sewing.

nanabirdmo 10-04-2007 06:28 AM

i agree with kathy, be sure to document them for your insurance, and of course for future generations.

Wow, what awesome quilted treasures! Love them all, thank you so much for sharing them with us :D It is like Christmas in October, can't wait to see more as you find them. I bet you are enjoying the "treasure" hunt :D

I love the quilts. I sure hope you find the others. Things do have a way of disappearing along with the stories that go with them. The fan quilt is awesome. Almost looks like a drunkards path variation. I love them all.

What a great find and to know your grandmothers tiny hands made each. They are beautiful.....thanks for sharing with the rest of us.

Thank you sharing your beautiful treasures. I am 66yrs old and I have some of my grandmothers quilts made in thes 40's and 50's. Will post pictues when I am able to be on my feet more. two of them are tulip quillts and I am going to try and duplicate the pattern some day and make one of my own.

My 14 yr. old GD saw the quilts and wanted one to keep. She said "grandma these are just quilts they are treasures". she loved hearing the stories of the different fabrics and from whose clothing scraps they were made. some from flour sacks and others from scraps she saved. She lived with us and I remember sitting and watching her cut the pieces from every tiny scrap and then hand sewing them together. I don't know how they managed to do it with rotary cutters and sewing machines. Then she would drop her quilting frame down from the ceiling and hand quilt them.

Makes me feel pretty humble!!

my favorite is the Owls

irishrose 09-24-2012 07:28 PM

I really like the red and white one, but then I like curved patterns. The unidentified 'thread' is probably candlewicking cotton. Similar to some crochet cottons, but less finished - not as twisted. It was big in the 70s.

debcavan 09-24-2012 07:34 PM

What treasures. Thank you. It was such a joy to see them

Mariposa 09-24-2012 07:46 PM

How lucky you are to have such treasures your GD is absolutely right. I am the first quilter in my family so I am trying to start a tradition I sure hope it works.

nygal 09-25-2012 02:22 AM

Oh I love the pattern on the third one. What treasures you now have!

sewdarnbusy 09-25-2012 02:30 AM

I love these old quilts. Thanks for sharing them with us. I'm glad that your grandmother has you for a granddaughter.... someone to appreicate her hard work. I wonder where my quilts and UFO's will end up when I'm gone. I should make a will, just for the contents of my sewing room. I don't want it to be a burden to my family. Hopefully I will be around for a long time. LOL

stenthpatric 09-25-2012 02:40 AM

Hi Live2teach. I would also say that you really are very lucky that you have the embroidery quilts and other stuffs made by your grandmother. Such things are really valuable as well as nostalgic. Well, I liked all of them especially the one with the owls. You also mentioned that you will keep on posting more images of the embroidery work done by your grandmother. We all are waiting for more pics of the beautiful quilts.

jackied 09-25-2012 02:56 AM
