I'm not sure how the colors will turn out in the photo. I love each of these fabrics--all Debbie Mumm stuff.

One small border seems like enough. There was going to be a wider outer of the green, but I don't know I like it simple. Does anyone have an opinion on that?

If I leave it as is I'll bind it in green.

Boy the corners where several triangles meet sure is thick! :?

I love that quilt layout, don't you? It is my go-to when I'm stuck for an idea for baby quilts. I just finished one for my husband's secretary's grandson (due next month). Getting ready to mail it today. Here's a picture.

The light blue fabric is cowboys.

Nice work!!

In my opinion, it needs a outer border. Maybe not the green but the tan/neutral color.

Those are really cute! Nice fabrics you both used. I'm in search of the pattern...

barnbum 02-18-2008 01:16 PM

Oh bj--I LOVE your colors!! You and Tiffany both did the squares around the middle square differently--I like yours better. :D

Yvonne 02-18-2008 02:11 PM

Karla and bj, those are wonderful quilts. Love the colors used in both. Nice work ladies!

bj 02-18-2008 03:07 PM

Karla, I love yours with the border. Depending on how big you want it to be, I'm not sure it needs another border. I think it looks really good as is.

sandpat 02-18-2008 03:15 PM

Great quilts Karla & bj. I'm going to have to find that pattern..it really looks totally different at a quick glance depending on the layout.

I'd stick with the border as is Karla..It doesn't need another. Just my opinion

I love these quilts. The pattern is so unusual.

bj 02-18-2008 05:09 PM

Here's the link to the pattern. Since I've made it several times now, I keep it saved in my favorites :)

Here's one I did in December. Same pattern. This one's baby was born yesterday!

Did this one last year. It has bee fabric.

i'm with you, barnbum. i think i'd leave it as is, too, but bind it in the same red. i love the way it reveals several different designs as your eye wanders around in it. :P

live2teach 02-18-2008 06:25 PM

Those are all beautiful! I love all of the different colors.

barnbum 02-18-2008 06:30 PM

bj--that's the one I have that inspired me to make this! Why did I think Tiffany did it?? :?: Thanks bj for your inspiration. :D

How did you happen to think of switching the middle square?

I spent an hour turning pieces once they were ready--but ended up going back to the original.

bj 02-18-2008 07:11 PM

I made one a couple of years ago and made the center star a solid block and had the baby's name embroidered in the center. Don't have a picture of it, but it was really cute. I did it in purple, orange, and a confetti print. Sounds awful, but it really worked well together.

They are so so so nice...I love them all....The horses are probablly very proud of you too (just as we are....I am sure they are warm and cozy with all the quilts around them....

sandpat 02-19-2008 08:35 AM

bj thank you for the pattern link...I've added it to my favorites, so now it is definetly on my TO DO list and I can't wait!

Bluphrog 02-20-2008 08:52 AM

IMHO, it does need a little more. You could do a "rail" border with a strip of the green, then another strip of the red. Or maybe use the tan, then bind with the green. I do like the colors.

newquiltertoni 02-20-2008 09:09 AM

B.J Maybe you are the one that can give me pointers on how to do the points. Yours look great.

bj 02-20-2008 05:51 PM

I haven't done a square in a square yet. I break those down into half-square triangles. I'm getting pretty good at those. I used to chop all my points off. Now, I make them a little bigger and trim down to the right size. Before, they were sometimes a little bigger, but I didn't trim them, so the points would get chopped off somewhere in the designs. I work a lot with 3.5 and 4.5 " squares. So I got square rulers that size so I can just trim around the ruler and it's the right size. If its got a diagonal seam you have to be careful to keep the diagonal on the ruler on that seam. That block might also be a good candidate for paper piecing, but I don't know how to do that either :) All I know is, I've made 7 baby quilts using that design, and each one turns out a little better than the last one did. The first one I made like it had very few points..they all got chopped off. LOL.

Probably because Tiffany does such beautiful work. I take it as a compliment that you thought it was her :) :)

That's what I discovered--after I had trimmed a few. I was trimming the same color twice--rather than centering it. I caught on, but a few of my points of a bit off. :?

hannahsmom 02-20-2008 09:10 PM

I think it looks good without another border. I think all the variety's look great... it is crazy how just changing the colors can totally change the look of the quilt. Great jobs ladies!!!

mary705 02-22-2008 03:30 AM

Both of the quilts look great and thank you for the link. Saw a lot of other ideas from that site.
