"Liberated" Barn for DQ Swap

2 Attachment(s)
I've been experimenting in "liberated" piecing. It takes a little foresight to put one together but this was fun. Only wish I would've used a little more contrast in windmill and sky. This should be in OK tomorrow. Just the windmill is first.

pacquilter 01-27-2012 09:39 AM

Wow, really creative, and great thinking "out of the box"!

seam-ripper-sue 01-27-2012 09:42 AM

I think it's adorable, the windmill blades seem to be rotating.

quiltinggirl 01-27-2012 09:55 AM

Oooh, very very nice! :)

Mariposa 01-27-2012 09:57 AM

Looks like a fun project!

That is absolutely wonderful ... a very realistic funky farm scene! You got the old windmill just right (yes OK, a little more contrast would been nice). And your detailing of the birds, grass?/hay? growing up above the fabric, and straw hanging out of the mow is fantastic.

I'm sure in your farm community this will be a hit. Is it heading to the school fundraiser too? or?

Cheshirecatquilter 01-27-2012 10:19 AM

Can you say "fabric paints" or perhaps markers? You can add some shadow and contour to the windmill to make it pop out a bit. Still, it's pretty just the way it is.

ChildoftheUniverse 01-27-2012 10:24 AM

Love this... what is liberated piecing?

QuiltnNan 01-27-2012 10:51 AM

very nicely done!!

bubble951 01-27-2012 10:55 AM

Gives me ideas! Thanks

Veronica 01-27-2012 10:56 AM

Wow! That's great looking.

kwiltkrazy 01-27-2012 11:07 AM

The lightness of the windmill blades makes it look like motion. Good job.

lfstamper 01-27-2012 12:13 PM

Very nice job!

oksewglad 01-27-2012 01:30 PM

Thanks you for the kind words. This is a stretch for me; my third liberated project. I took pictures as I went through the process.
QuiltE--no this is for the doll quilt swap here on board; not sure how "liberated" my little community is--lol
Cheshirecatquilter--I really like your idea, but I am not very steady with a pen or paint brush. Whenever I try to touch something up like you suggest, I just mess it up and find it best to leave it be. Otherwise I would take the suggestion and run with it.
CotUninverse--liberated quilting is a free style approach to piecing. Think "Gee's Bend" quilts. Gwen Marston is a pioneer in it applying it to modern day quilting. Accurate cutting and sewing are not the norm!

toadmomma 01-27-2012 02:37 PM

really cute and creative

jillnjo 01-27-2012 02:41 PM

Gladie; I love it!! I really like Gwen Marston designs and made a liberated flower pot quilt for a niece of mine. It's fun.

That was my first thoughts also! You did a great job!

LeslieFrost 01-27-2012 03:11 PM

Great job! As usual. This inspires me to try some 'liberation' also.

dublb 01-27-2012 03:52 PM

I love It! Great look! I love windmills! Windmills mean water here in W TX. We're still in a drought!

malega 01-27-2012 04:11 PM

That is so very nice.

Gilly 01-28-2012 06:09 AM

My favorite barn ever!! Love i t!

jillnjo 01-28-2012 06:45 AM

G.- Looking at your artwork again! I like the way the windmill looks. All the detail-did you make the barn siding 3-D? the straw and grass looks real. And the colors are so me, country looking and all. N.

Greenheron 01-28-2012 06:49 AM

Super job--I bet many will be inspired, me for one. Thanks for posting.

Krystyna 01-28-2012 06:51 AM

N, yes I ran parallel lines up and down the barn about every 1/2 inch. I knew I had the haymow right when 6 yo GD saw "straw". Glad you like it. How hard was it for you to do your liberated flower pot? We have similar quilting styles and processes and it was difficult for me to be "free". For me taking this a step further with the barn and windmill was more challenging.

uniquedesigner 01-28-2012 09:41 PM

Great job The quilt looks like a picture.

nancia 01-30-2012 02:18 PM

i like it-- in the spirit of modern or art quilting. very nice and extremely artistic!!

almond 01-30-2012 07:48 PM

What a nice quilt. I love the barn quilts. I think you represented Iowa very well. Thanks from a fellow Iowan.

Your welcome, M. These barns are fast fading from our landscape just as your Rickleif's house is. Between DS's and our place we still have old barns, but have new ones too. More functionality for our farm today, but not the same character.

Much the same here ... barns only last for so long on functionality and then they need to be revived or replaced. Oft times the replacement happens, as it gives so much more options for the "modern conveniences" for good animal care.

uniquedesigner 02-04-2012 07:13 AM

Nice, a cute Scene. I love old barns.
