Here is a baby quilt I made for a friend. It is my first log cabin. My goal with my baby quilts I make for friends is to use up scraps I have lying around. Anyway, I like the way this one turned out. I need suggestions, though. How do you quilt a log cabin? And what is your opinion on how I should quilt this one? Any input is appreciated.

Very nice job!
I would either do a meander or stitch in the ditch. I guess you could also do a grid if you'd prefer. Can't wait to see your 2nd one. 8) |
Great Job!
I keep wanting to try a log cabin and this appears to be a great way to start! May try this out myself. I agree with desertdebbe - meander or ditch stitch. Thanks for the idea. Rein |
Pretty!! I've stitched in the ditch on the ones I've done--but I've paid a quilter to do a nice overall design.

Very Pretty! :D :D :D I can't wait to see more! :D :D :D

very nice..

That's really pretty!

Nice use of "scraps".

Great quilt. I've always quilted in the ditch and it's easy to do by hand, if you've press the seams one way.By machine I doubt it makes as much a difference. I like to stress the design and meandering doesn't as much. Either way, it's looking really nice. I never have enough scraps of one material to carry through out a whole quilt.

You didnt say if you would hand or machine quilt, but this is how I did mine with hand quilting (if the pictures are clear enough)

mgshaw,
Thank you for the pics! That is kind of what I was thinking of, but wasn't sure. Didn't know if there was a name for it, kind of a spiral or something. I will be machine quilting. I tried hand quilting, and I am terrible at it, and very, very slow. If that is all I could do, I wouldn't quilt. I admire the heck out of the workmanship, though. It is by far the prettiest, in my opinion. Thanks again, Robbi |
nice colors

That is very pretty and I love those colors. I can't wait to see it quilted.

If you decide to channel quilt, I suggest you go diagonal to the pattern. My second quilt was a log cabin pattern and the top turned out beautiful. Then I channel quilted it rght down the center of each log cabin strip. Big mistake! It really took away from the pattern. Just wanted to share my mistake so you don't make the same one.

Sweet!!

Love the color scheme. I think meandering works nice

Great baby quilt. I like that it's not a "typical" baby quilt and it will work for boy or girl. Another quilting option is to quilt down the center of each log. Although, since it is a baby quilt machine quilting is best. There is a lot of washing that happens with baby quilts and the time spent machine quilting is better. Keep up the good work.

I believe your layout is called 'furrows'. Nicely done.
I laid mine out in 'All Sevens'. I then quilted a rectangle around each row side to side and filled the rectangles in with smaller rectangles each smaller one following the width of the log cabin strips. I then turned the quilt 90 degrees and did the same thing to the columns. Quilted three squares around the quilt in the border, called it done. tim in san jose |
