What a beautiful gift!!! I know how much you will treasure this beauty!!! :D:D:D

I haven't tried this but I have read that, if you choose not to repair it, put a piece of netting over the part that needs it and it will help keep it together. I would certainly do something to preserve it.
|
What a wonderful friend and a great story to go with your quilt. Please repair to keep that piece of history from further damage.

Wow!!!!
|
YES!!! Repair, repair, repair. Without repairs it will continue to deteriorate and fall apart. Repaired it will last a long, long time. No question....repair!!! It's a beautiful quilt, and it deserves to live long & prosper!!! :-)
|
It is a beautiful quilt and I would repair it so it could be used, but it probably won't be considered an antique anymore. You have to decide what is more important.
I love how they did the ruffling, it's really a beautiful quilt! :) |
Wow what a great friend. The quilt is beautiful.
|
Its a really pretty quilt!

Well, I have finally made my decision - I want to be able to use this because it has so many wonderful memories....and so I will eventually attempt to find ways of repairing - there are a couple of of places int he back that needs to be repaired but I have to be careful on how I do that since I have no extra sugar sacks from Cuba :-)..I may have to wait and go back to Cuba next year and bring one back.... :-)
But for the front, I can find ways of doing that.....especially since the majority of what needs to be done on the front is really to resew the strips...a couple of repairs for holes but nothing serious....I think that this will be a great project to work on!!! I am so glad that you all checked in and gave me your advice.... Bill |
Beautiful quilt. I would get advice on repairs from somebody with experience. Thanks for sharing.
|
What a wonderful gift. To repair or not, that's a tuffy. I have some 60 yr olds quilts that the binding is almost wore completely off but I just can't bear to change a thing on them, but I probably should.
|
Wow! How lucky you are. I think I would get a coffee table with a glass top and display it underneath it as is. It is a wonderful quilt.

I would definitely repair it. The sentimental value is priceless. It is an incredible gift with a wonderful story behind it.
Thank you for sharing. |
An appraiser would probably tell you NOT to repair the quilt. If there are spots frayed (sp?) just cover them; do not remove any of the original fabric.
|
that is sooo neat.. I would leave it and hang it for you to see all the time and show it off when needed!!
|
wow, what a wonderful friend you have...your quilt is sooooo pretty..i would leave it as it is....look at all the time it took to make all those ruffles...have never thought of making a quilt like that...
|
Exquisite colors. If you can repair invisibly somehow, otherwise, I would leave it as is. What a special gift for you.
|
That sure is pretty! I would repair it by hand.

what you would do - leave as is or repair!!!!! Do you have to replace fabrics (???), personally I would not fix it, but that's just me. However, I would put a label on the back telling your friends story of making it and how you received it. |
This is an awesome gift and the quilt is really gorgeous! I love the ruffles in the quilt, never seen anything like this before and you are a lucky man that you get it.
I defenitly would repair it. (by hand) |
What a beautiful, unique and wonderful gift. I don't know how to advise you on repairing it. I don't know if it changes the value of the quilt if you do repair it. If it doesn't,and you have enough confidence, then I say go ahead and repair it.

I think you have to decide which is more important to you -- having an antique given to you by a friend or using an antique quilt given to you by a friend. If it will only be a possession that you will store, then I say leave it in it's present condition. If you want to use it or have it on display, then I say make hand repairs that will add to the longevity of the quilt. Remember, her intention was that you would make the repairs.
|
I agree with "Marjpf"...what a wonderful gift !!!
|
I believe that you should repair it so that it can be used (or not) and also so that it would last longer. Unrepaired, I would be afraid that it would continue to deteriorate. You want this special gift to last for years.
Yes, definitely make a label for the quilt telling its story. There is value in the story. Who knows this might find its way to a museum many years from now. Such a delightful gift from a cherished friend! You are both blessed to know each other. warm quilt hugs, sue in CA |
I have decided that I will one day make the repairs..I don't need to worry about the top because I think that I can repair that by simple stitching the fabric strips back in place...I do need to make a couple of repaires or patches to the back because there are a couple of tears in the sugar sack back..but I can perhaps just use muslin and hand sew large squares to cover the tears..to protect the back...
For washing, I am thinking that perhaps a gentle wash in the machine - line dry - or perhaps tumble try - but this one would have never seen a dryer because you don't find dryers in private homes in Cuba...... I do want to be able to have this has a completed item - that can be used...it does have such special memories - and Romaila does expect me to do the repairs..... It certainly is a one of a kind item..I don't want to take away from the original work that she did with her MIL - but I just want to be able to have it repaired...... |
Have you figured out how to make this quilt? It looks like the strips are sewn on a foundation. Are the strips hemmed? How was the pattern marked? (if it is on a foundation) Were the foundation blocks then sewn together? It is hard to see from a picture. Were the strips pre-gathered or gathered as they were sewn on? It is so interesting to me!
|
This post has been read 4,017 times. Have you noticed that? It so much a human interest story for me, I keep coming back to it to see what decision you have made on repairing it or not. I support either decision you make.

Beverly,
The strips are multicolored stripes that are cut from assorted fabrics...various types....blends...... They are sewn to a sugar sack backing - the blocks are then sewn together....the strips are not hemmed....they seem to have been gathered as they were sewn...... Dsb38327 - WOW...I didn't even look at that - WOW!!! I am so glad that so many people are so interested in this... It is a wonderful story...for me it is so special - and coming from a friend - having a bit of history behind the quilt.......I am so glad that so many people have enjoyed the pictures and the story - I will be sure to let Romaila know all about this..she will be tickled pink!!!! I developed the photos of us with the quilt so that I can mail them out to her this week... |
Bill, Your quilt is gorgeous. Since your friend expects you to do the repairs, I would make them. But I wouldn't wash it in a machine. I would wash it as she would, even if you have to use your bath tub to do it. That would be authentic. And then roll in towels (oh my gosh - how many) and then line dry. JMHO
Glad you had such a wonderful time. Hugs, Kathy |
Hi Kathy,
It is great to hear from you....... Thanks for your thoughts..I think that perhaps I should stay away from the machine as well :-) Good Ideal!!! And yes, had a fantastic time...... I have so many more pictures to list on Facebook - but I think I should pehaps add some here.... |
I know your friends here would love to see more pics.
|
I would repair it. It is an amazing quilt. Why not show it at its very best.................... : )
|
Fantastic quilt, a cherished friend and gift to be sure.
|
Below is a great idea, what a beautiful quilt, so full of memories for her. I'm jealous that you get to go to Cuba, always wanted to go myself.
