What a blessing to have such a beautiful quilt!!! My mother had two quilts that my grandmother, her mother made. Unfortunately they disappeared. I would have loved to have one of my grandmothers quilts. She passed away when my mother was 4 months pregnant with me. I never knew her but I did inherit a large picture of her and my grandfather that hangs in my family room.

oh wow, what an absolute treasure! Hopefully there is a label on it so future generations know the history of the quilt.

Wow! What a nice gift you have been given. Love!

I have mine in an Amish quilt display cabinet, sitting in my living room where there's not direct sun light that would fade them.
My Mom made each of us (7) childern a butter fly quilt, so they are from the mid 1940's. Mine and my sister just older than I have
given ours to 2 of my grand daughters. My sister doesn't have childern. But I am the care giver for the quilts until the girls are established in their homes.

The back of your quilt appears to be a kit that came out about then. It would be the size of a sheet with the design stamped on it. I did one at that time that had a peacock in the center. It came with different designs. My 6 yr son was in the hospital and I did the embrodiery while sitting by his bed.
Love it Love it

This is my kind of quilt for the colors, the embroidery and the vintage look of it. Treasure it always.

My sister displayed an old quilt above the head of her bed. She had a long shelf with a hanging bar under the shelf, but a decorative curtain/drapery rod would work just as well. Just an idea. It is so fun to read postings like yours--having been married in 1955, I don't think of the 50's as old, but I know it is. Just time is so different depending on where one is (age-wise) when viewing it! thanks for sharing. It is a beautiful quilt.

I've just been to the Rio Grande Valley quilt show and saw quilts displayed by clamping them at the top with pants hangers which are then hung over a rod. Not sure if I'd leave the pants hangers on for too long though as they may leave dents where they are clamped on.

What a treasure for you!

It is lovely, I love the way she embroidered on the back, lots of work in this quilt.. I am reading a great novel named Wedding Ring by Emille Richards. It is a story of a old double wedding ring quilt top. It is about a Grandmother that is a horder and her daughter and grandaughter and the 3 have never been very loving towards each other and now the dwr quilt has brought them all back together to spend the summer cleaning out the Grandma's house, much to her objections. But the story of how this quilt came to be lets each of them see a little of what makes up each ones lives and brings them closer together,, a great read for quilters or just anyone!

Because you want to display it, don't wash it. Just put it outside to air. (I lay mine out on 4X8 wall insilation-and cover with a sheet to keep the sun off). Sew a sleeve on the back to hang it with and enjoy the labors of your grandmother. I love, love the back!!

Great find. Treasures like this help me realize that you don't always have to be a color coordinating genius to make a work of art. Thanks for sharing!

She never had a chance. :) I just asked my dad, Can I have this? And he said yes. :)

I haven't read the entire thread, so someone else may have already made this comment. Hanging your beautiful old quilt could cause some of the stitching to pull out and/or break from the weight of the quilt. This quilt is probably rather heavy because of the many small pieces. I suggest that you display it on a bed elsewhere in your house. Do you have a guestroom? That would be the perfect place to show it off. BUT I would put it soewhere else when guests are using the room! Alternate suggestion: display it on a bench at the foot of your bed - refolding it from time to time, so it doesn't get damaged along the folds.

It isn't even my family heirloom and I can feel the love and tenderness that went into every stitch!
